David Starr Looks to Rebound at Kentucky Speedway

DAVID STARR LOOKS TO REBOUND AT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 8, 2002) -- Last Saturday a blown engine at
Kansas Speedway forced David Starr to accept his first DNF of the
season, a bitter pill to swallow for the driver of the No. 75 Spears
Manufacturing Chevrolet and former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point
leader.

"You know, we have to expect problems during the season," said a
dejected Starr. "But knowing that doesn’t make it any easier to accept.
Every team will have problems and setbacks, but the team that overcomes
them the best will win. We’ve not had many, besides some slow pit stops
-- and some of those were my fault" (such as at Gateway International
Raceway when his foot slipped off the clutch and sent his truck lurching
forward on two separate stops). 

"Ron Hutter has built us great engines all year, but we can’t expect
them to turn these kind of RPM’s and never break. They will on occasion.
Now we just need to put this race behind us, and look forward to
Kentucky with the goal of rebounding and running very strong and putting
the Spears truck back up front," explained Starr.

When asked if this DNF would be a setback in his quest for the point
championship, Starr shrugged.

"I suppose it could be, but we are not out points racing. It’s still a
bit too early for that, and that’s not my style anyway," added Starr.
"My goal is to win races, and that’s what I try to do every time I get
behind the wheel. Wayne and Connie Spears hired me to take them to
victory lane, and that’s what I am trying to do."

Though he has just one start on the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway (in 2000,
Starr qualified 21st and finished in 15th on the lead lap), Starr has a
good feeling about the track and his chances on the upcoming Kroger 225.
This race will be held under the lights on Saturday, July 13 at 8:00
p.m. (EDT) and broadcast live on ESPN and the MRN radio network.

"Kentucky is another big, fast track," said Starr. "I like all the
tracks -- big or small -- and we are excited to head over there because
the Spears team has a lot of momentum building right now. We ran well
last week before the motor broke, but I think the team is ready to step
up and start right where we left off."
