Exhibition Place - Toronto, Ontario - 1.755-Mile Temporary Street Course
Round 8 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola held onto
the outside-fifth-row starting spot for Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto after
today's final qualifying session over the 1.755-mile temporary street track
around Exhibition Place. Kanaan bettered his Friday provisional qualifying
time by more than six tenths of a second with a fast lap of 58.706 seconds
(107.621 mph). But he failed to move upon the grid as his fellow
competitors improved in similar fashion. He was fastest in today's morning
practice session.
Cristiano da Matta, winner of the last three CART FedEx Championship Series
events and the fastest provisional qualifier on Friday, held onto the pole
today with a track record-setting lap today of 58.135 seconds (108.678 mph),
almost a half-second faster than his best lap yesterday. Paul Tracy, third
on the provisional qualifying grid, moved past Bruno Junqueira into the No.
2 starting spot with a lap of 58.172 seconds (108.609 mph). Junqueira wound
up third with a lap of 58.256 seconds (108.452 mph).
Sunday-morning warm-up is set for 9:30 a.m. EDT. Race time is 1:30 p.m. EDT
Sunday and it will be telecast live by CBS-TV.
TONY KANAAN QUOTES
"We were definitely encouraged after practice this morning. We definitely
found some speed today, which makes us confident for the race.
Unfortunately, in qualifying mode, we had a hard time finding enough grip to
get a clean, fast lap. We still have a lot of things to work on, but that
will still be the case after we leave here, no matter what happens tomorrow.
We are learning every time we take to the track with this new Lola chassis.
This isn't the greatest place in the world to be starting 10th. We just
have to be smart with our strategy, have nice, clean pit stops, and take
advantage of any opportunities that present themselves on the racetrack.
And, of course, we have to stay out of all the trouble that always seems to
happen at one time or another on these street courses. It may not sound
like it right now, but I'm really looking forward to the race."
