Ameristar Casino Indy 200 - Friday, July 5, 2002 - Practice Notes/Quotes
Kansas Speedway - Kansas City, Kan. - 1.5-Mile Oval
Round 9 of 15 on the 2002 Indy Racing League
Felipe Giaffone drove the #21 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Chevrolet G-Force to
the ninth- and 10th-fastest practice times of the day in today's morning and
afternoon sessions in preparation for Sunday's Ameristar Casino Indy 200
Indy Racing League event at Kansas Speedway. Giaffone turned a lap of
24.2709 seconds (216.534 mph) around the 1.5-mile oval this morning, but
dropped a spot in the order on the afternoon timesheet despite a slightly
better lap of 25.2498 seconds (216.715 mph). Giaffone's was the fastest
G-Force in the field this morning as the top eight competitors all drive
Dallaras. Only Jeff Ward's G-Force was faster this afternoon with a time of
25.2484 seconds (216.727 mph), albeit only by 14 thousandths of a second.
Infiniti-powered cars paced both practice sessions today, led by rookie
Tomas Scheckter in the morning with a lap of 25.0782 seconds (218.197 mph),
and Laurent Redon in the afternoon with a lap of 25.0019 seconds (218.863
mph).
Practice continues Saturday morning with qualifying set to begin at 4:30
p.m. EDT. Race time Sunday is 1 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast on ABC-TV.
FELIPE GIAFFONE
"We still have some work to do on our setup for qualifying. There will be
one more practice session on Saturday to try and get that done. But I think
we have a good setup for the race. The track is slippery, maybe because of
the rubber from the NASCAR trucks (which are racing at Kansas on Saturday).
The condition of the track is not the same as it was when we tested here
last month. This morning, we tried to change something in our setup after
the first practice, but it didn't work as we hoped it would work this
afternoon. But the good thing is that we know which way to go with our
setup. I think it's going to be difficult to take the pole from the
Infinitis. I hope it will be easy to pass during the race, but I'm a little
bit worried because last year it was easy to pass, but this year it's not
the case, so far. So it will be a little bit more important to qualifying
near the front this year."
