Rand Racing - Daytona victory
Daytona International Speedway
race, July 4/5, 2002
mixed results
Rand Racing finished first and third in the SRPII class in the late-night
Rolex Sports Car Series race at Daytona International Speedway. Anthony
Lazzaro of Acworth, Ga., and Jerry Nadeau of Mooresville, N.C., topped the
class, but Terry Borcheller of Phoenix and Niclas Jönsson of Aliso Viejo,
Calif., retired from the race with an engine failure. The win was the team's
seventh-consecutive class victory.
Borcheller started the No. 8 Nissan Lola from the class pole, with Lazzaro
right behind in the No. 7 Lola. They swapped the lead twice before pitting
for driver changes during a caution period after 50 minutes of the 2h20 race.
Jönsson lost an aerodynamic dive-plane on the No. 8 car in the crowded
restart and relinquished the class lead to Nadeau in the No. 7 car. Jönsson
pitted at 1h30 for tires, then retired with an engine failure 15 minutes
later. Nadeau made one more stop for fuel and held the class lead to the
checkered flag.
Terry Borcheller
"The car was great and I had a really fun run with Anthony. I learned a lot
going behind him about how the car runs through someone else's air. [on
losing radio contact with the team] "I didn't know if I should come in, so
when Anthony was behind me I motioned for him to come up beside me because I
was going to ask him to ask the crew if I should pit. But he didn't know
what I was doing! He pitted, so I followed him in."
Niclas Jönsson
"We decided that we were not going to take tires [on the first pitstop]
because we had a very well-balanced car. The 7 car decided to take tires and
go for it. Our car got really loose and I couldn't match Jerry's lap times.
I picked up a vibration in the right rear, so we came in and took tires. The
vibration went away, but 10 laps later the engine let go."
Anthony Lazzaro
"We had a different driver this weekend, with Jerry coming in. He's never
driven a prototype and I think he stepped right in and did a really good job.
It seems like every time we drive one of these cars, we win with it, so I've
been pretty happy about that."
Jerry Nadeau
"I had a blast. The guys gave me a great car, Anthony did a great job. It's
too bad what happened to our teammates because I think we would have had a
fun time at the end. I've got to thank the guys for helping me out and
tutoring me."
