Theys Holds On To Rolex Sports Car Series Points Lead


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 1, 2002) -- The Rolex Sports Car Series released its latest point standings following last weekend's 6 Hours of The Glen, part of the Sports Car Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International. Belgian Didier Theys maintained his lead in the premier SportsRacing Prototype class. Race winners Chris Dyson and James Weaver are in second and third place, respectively. The team standings mirror the driver standings with Theys' Doran Lista Racing in first place followed by Dyson Racing Team's #16 entry. 

Terry Borcheller continues to lead the SportsRacing Prototype II driver standings with a commanding lead over Darren Law after Law's #07 BMW Picchio experienced technical problems and was unable to start the 6 Hours of The Glen. Law's co-driver, 2001 champion Andy Lally, dropped out of the top-three due to the car's failure allowing German Ralf Kelleners to move into a third-place tie with his Rand Racing teammate Anthony Lazzaro. Rand Racing's #8 entry continues to lead the SRPII team standings, followed by G&W Motorsports/Momentum Motorcars in second.

Chris Bingham, the 2001 GTS driver champion, maintained his lead in the GTS driver standings, over Team Greeneman's Tommy Byrne and Richard Millman, who share second place in the standings. Bingham's Park Place Racing increased its lead in the team standings to 39 points over Team Greeneman that was forced to miss the 6 Hours of The Glen with a broken transporter.

In the American GT class, Flis Motorsports' Doug Goad is now the lone driver atop the point standings, after his teammate Craig Conway, who had been sharing the lead, missed the 6 Hours of The Glen. Jim Briody, who joined the Flis team in Phoenix after running with ACP Motorsports at the start of the season, advanced to second place in the latest standings, only two points behind Goad. In the AGT team standings, Flis' #90 Corvette continues to lead with a nine-point advantage on the team's #09 car. Morgan Dollar Motorsports #46 Corvette remained in third place in the team standings, joined in a tie with ACP Motorsports. 

Perspective Racing and its drivers Joao Barbosa and Thierry Perrier continue to trail Kevin Buckler and The Racer's Group in the GT points race. Buckler held onto the driver points lead, increasing his advantage over Barbosa and Perrier by 11 points. The Racer's Group also stayed in front in the team point standings, increasing its lead to five points over the Perspective team. 

The Rolex Series manufacturer standings had no lead changes following the 6 Hours of The Glen. Judd and Dallara continue atop the SRP engine and chassis points, while Nissan and Lola extended their advantage in the SRPII manufacturer standings. Porsche tightened the gap on first-place Saleen, cutting the lead from 11 to six points in the GTS class. The GT standings remained the same with Porsche on top, but a change between second and third place occurred after BMW's third-place finish at the 6 Hours of The Glen. BMW has now passed Mosler for the first time this season to take the number two spot. BMW trails Porsche by only 15 points. Chevy continues its dominance in the American GT class, increasing its lead to 41 points over Ford. 

The next round of the Rolex Sports Car Series will be at Daytona International Speedway for the Jani-King Paul Revere 250 on the Fourth of July, part of the Pepsi 400 weekend.
