Kenseth wins Canada Day Shootout
NASCAR's winningest driver wins with late pass on CASCAR's best
HAMILTON, ON - Prior to Sunday's 'Canada Day Shootout, presented by Dodge'
at Cayuga Speedway, many wondered how quickly the visiting NASCAR racers
would be able to get up to speed in the CASCAR Late Models. Matt Kenseth
answered that question when he drove his DeWalt Taurus around the outside
of defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. with just 7 laps
to go in the 100-lap final segment at the 5/8-mile Hamilton-area oval.
Kenseth, who is Winston Cup's winningest driver this season - with three
victories to his credit - survived a furious late-race challenge by Thomson
(Home Hardware Chevy) and took the popular win in front of a vocal capacity
crowd. At the finish, Kenseth and Thomson raced cleanly in the inaugural
'Canada Day Shootout', with only .272 of a second between them as they
charged under the checkered flag. Blue Streak Intrepid racer Al Turner came
home third, less than a second behind the second-place Thomson.
The next-best running NASCAR racer, for much of the event, was NASCAR
Truck Series regular Ted Musgrave. The Mopar / Chrysler Financial Intrepid
driver was running fourth with 10 laps to go when he ran out of gas. Like
Kenseth and Musgrave, the rest of the NASCAR 'guests' performed admirably.
Ken Schrader (9th), Tony Stewart (11th), Johnny Benson (11th) and Dave
Blaney (14th) all proved to be more than capable of making the adjustment
to the CASCAR machinery.
CASCAR NOTES: In time trials for the 'Canada Day Shootout, presented by
Dodge' at Cayuga Speedway, Don Thomson continued where he left off the
previous Saturday at Mosport Speedway, taking the pole for the race with a
21.480 second lap around the 5/8-mile Cayuga oval. Proving that he was able
to quickly adapt to being in a CASCAR Late Model, visiting NASCAR racer Ted
Musgrave - who took the Truck Series points lead on Saturday night at the
Milwaukee Mile - posted the second quickest time during qualifying (21.512
seconds). Based on their qualifying efforts, Thomson and Musgrave secured
the top two positions, respectively, for the start of the 100-lap feature
race… In the first of two 'NAPA Twin 50' qualifying races, Don Thomson led
all 50 laps en route to a 2.685-second win over Al Turner and Mark Dilley.
The second 50 lap sprint saw Peter Gibbons lead the first 11 laps, before
Ted Musgrave blasted around the outside of him off turn 2. Gibbons briefly
re-took the lead following a mid-race restart, but Musgrave's Beauchamp
Motorsports-prepared Intrepid proved to be too strong, and the NASCAR racer
once again took the lead with a power move entering the backstraight. At
the finish, Musgrave won the second NAPA Twin 50 by just 0.153 of a second
over Gibbons… Matt Kenseth won the 10 lap race featuring the six NASCAR
racers. The 'Auto Parts Plus / Auto Plus Charity Shootout for the Rick
Hansen Institute' was sponsored by Uni-Select. Kenseth received the $5,000
winner's cheque for the win, and immediately turned it over to CASCAR racer
Al Turner's son, James, who accepted the donation on behalf of the Rick
Hansen Institute, to aid its work in spinal cord injury research.
