Sievert Tops UMP Late Model
Main at Hales Corners Speedway
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 29-Russ Scheffler got balked by slower traffic with
two laps to go, leaving the door open for Bret Sievert to pick up the UMP
late model feature win at the Hales Corners Speedway on Saturday night.
T.J. Dolhun led the 30-lap event from the start as Sievert and Scheffler
worked their way to the second and third spots, respectively. On lap 21
Sievert used the inside line in turns three and four to take the top spot
with Scheffler following through to drop Dolhun back to third.
Scheffler dogged Sievert for five laps before using the high line in turn
four to take the lead at lap 27. Coming to the frontstretch to begin lap 28,
however, the slower car of Ron Eiler moved to the high lane just as Scheffler
was going by. As a result Scheffler got squeezed into the outer wall and
Sievert used the low groove to zoom back past and take the lead and the
eventual win. Scheffler settled for second, with Dolhun third, Scott Specht
fourth and Rick Scheffler fifth.
Terry Thomas won the night's 20-lap sportsmen feature after a back and
forth battle with Don Sorce Jr. in the closing stages of the race. Sorce Jr.
grabbed the lead at lap 18 but Thomas fought back and retook the lead at the
white flag. Once in front, Thomas eased away as Sorce Jr. disputed second
with Eddie Lemay. Lemay got the spot at the flagstand, with Sorce Jr. third,
John Sidesky fourth and Billy Lemay fifth.
Everette Fitch topped the caution-plagued modified Triple Crown feature.
Mike Knurr placed second after leading the majority of the event, with Brian
Crapser third, Dan Mech fourth and Jimmy Muth Jr. fifth.
Ken Fleury Jr. topped the competitive 20-lap Hales Whales nightcapper
over David Paskiewicz, Jim Reinhardt, J.J. Weickowski and Barry Cates.
