Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola will
start Sunday's CART Grand Prix of Chicago from the outside of the second row
after today's opening day of practice and qualifying.  Kanaan circled the
Chicago Motor Speedway mile oval in 23.526 seconds (157.450 mph) on his
first of two qualifying laps to grab the fourth spot on the grid.  He was
fastest in today's opening practice session for this weekend's rare two-day
event and, thus, was the final car in the qualifying line.

Dario Franchitti will start from the pole Sunday after a fast qualifying lap
of 23.428 seconds (158.118 mph).  Alex Tagliani will start from the outside
of the front row after a fast lap of 23.434 seconds (158.078 mph).
Cristiano da Matta, who's vying for his third race win in a row and fourth
of the season, qualified third in 23.443 seconds (158.017 mph).

Race time Sunday is 2:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. EDT) with a live
broadcast set for CBS.

"We made a change right before we went out for our qualifying run and it
didn't turn out to be the right call.  I was involved in the decision and I
agreed with it 100 percent.  We listened a lot to all of the other drivers
who went before me and they all said they had a bad push.  So we made the
car loose and it wasn't the way to go.  It turns out it was the same change
we made at the end of the morning practice session when I got a little
sideways.  That's what happens when you don't know your equipment as well as
you should.  This is only our fourth race with the Lola and we never did any
testing.  So every weekend, so far, it' been a trial under fire.  But the
guys have been working so incredibly hard since the first part of May and we
're learning a little bit every time we go out on the track.  One of these
days we'll get it all right.  One thing we do know is that we have a great
race car, so starting in the fourth position isn't all that bad.  Two
weekends ago I was complaining about starting 14th, so now I should be happy
about fourth.  I thought we had a legitimate shot at the pole today, but
that change we made hurt us.  Oh well.  Live and learn.  Before we even got
here, we wanted to make absolutely sure we started in the top five because
it's so hard to pass here.  So we got that, for sure.  Now we just have to
stay out of trouble, have good, clean pit stops, and we'll have a shot at a
podium finish, at least.  This Pioneer-WorldCom car is definitely capable of
winning the race."
