NOTES OF INTEREST: Although the Big Daddy’s Liberty 200 marks the first
appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at South Boston Speedway, the
well-known stock car tour, born in Toledo Ohio in 1953, is celebrating
its 50th anniversary season in 2002. Leading the parade of entrants is
8-time ARCA RE/MAX winner & Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader who last
raced with the ARCA RE/MAX cars on the DuQuoin, Illinois dirt-mile in
2001. Schrader, who has 15 top-5s in 24 ARCA RE/MAX starts, has entered
his own Federated Auto Parts Pontiac. Heading to South Boston, the
current point leader is Kennewick, Washington native Damon Lusk (2002
Pocono & Atlanta winner) who, at just 24, is the only driver who has
posted top-10 finishes in all 10 events this year. Lusk has a slim
35-point margin over 3-time champion Frank Kimmel. Kimmel, the winner at
Toledo Speedway last Sunday, has won 5 of 10 events in 2002. 3rd in
points is 22-year-old Walkerton, Indiana rookie Chad Blount. Blount, in
Todd Braun-owned Dodge Intrepids, won at MIS a short time ago and is
tied with Kimmel with the most Old Milwaukee Poles (3) this year. Also
on the entry list is 3rd-generation driver Jason Jarrett coming off a
runner-up finish at Toledo last Sunday. It was Jarrett’s 3rd runner-up
finish this year. Jarrett, who moved into 4th in the series standings as
a result, is one of very few drivers on the entry list who has ever
turned laps at South Boston. This year’s rookie crop is especially stout
with 3 rookies currently in the top-10 points including Blount,
18-year-old Mt. Juliet Tennessee driver Chase Montgomery who is tied for
5th in points with veteran Andy Belmont and 16-year-old Greenwood
Indiana driver Shelby Howard who is 7th. Also entered are 2nd & 3rd
generation ARCA drivers Todd Bowsher and Billy Venturini. Todd’s father
Jack Bowsher was a 3-time ARCA champion while Billy’s father Bill
Venturini was a 2-time champ. Bill Venturini will provide color
commentary in the booth alongside Rick Benjamin for Speed Channel’s live
telecast. In addition, the ageless Red Farmer of Hueytown AL, who serves
as team consultant to Jarrett, has been entered in a Jarrett back-up
car. The event also marks the return of ARCA RE/MAX veteran driver Bobby
Gerhart of Lebanon PA. Gerhart won the ARCA RE/MAX race at Talladega in
2001 as well as this year’s Daytona ARCA 200.
