Fairchild Semiconductor International , one of the largest global suppliers of high performance power products for multiple end markets, today announced that its Penang, Malaysia assembly and test facility has received the internationally recognized Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Systems (OHSAS) 18001 certification. Fairchild is the first US company in Penang to receive this certification, as well as one of the first companies in the semiconductor industry in Malaysia to be recognized.
OHSAS 18001 is compatible with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 for quality, and ISO 14001 for environmental, management systems standards. The OHSAS 18001 certification was created through the combined work of 80 percent of the world's leading national standards and certification bodies. It is designed to minimize the risk of accidents and near-miss incidents that employees and other parties may encounter while participating in work-related activities.
SIRIM QAS Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of SIRIM Berhad, audited the Fairchild Penang facility. SIRIM, Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia, is a government-owned company under the Ministry of Finance. SIRIM and UK NAB also awarded Fairchild Penang with ISO 14001 certification for excellence in environmental health and safety standards, a first for an American multinational company in Malaysia.
Since Fairchild's inception in 1997, the company has worked closely with the local Penang and Malaysian authorities to meet their standards of excellence. Fairchild's Penang plant provides assembly and testing for interface, logic, analog, and discrete products. The facility currently employs approximately 2,000 people and has received numerous awards including Malaysia's Occupational Health and Safety Award in 1997, Malaysia's Human Resource Development Award in 1998, and the prestigious Malaysian Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award for Exceptional Performance and Excellent Performance in environmental protection for 1998/1999 and 2000/2001 respectively.
"Fairchild has always been committed to creating work environments that meet the highest standards in safety and health," said Kirk Pond, Fairchild's president, CEO and chairman of the board. "This latest certification in Penang validates our industry leading stance on protecting our employees and the environment."
Other Fairchild ISO 14001 certified facilities include Cebu, Philippines; Bucheon, South Korea; West Jordan, Utah; and South Portland, Maine.
