A LAP OF MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE WITH AMERICAN LE MANS
SERIES DRIVER DAVID BRABHAM
DUBLIN, Ohio (June 25, 2002) - The American Le Mans Series makes its return
to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio during the American Le Mans
at Mid-Ohio, June 28-30. Panoz Motorsports driver David Brabham clinched
last year's inaugural American Le Mans at Mid-Ohio event and will attempt to
defend his title this weekend with teammate Jan Magnussen. In this
narrative, Brabham describes the best way to drive the 2.258-mile, 13-turn
circuit.
"I am really looking forward to heading back to Mid-Ohio this year,
especially after Jan and I won the first ALMS race held there last year in
the Panoz. You actually start the race over on the back straight, but the
run past the pits is really the lead up to turn one. You go down one gear
for this left-hander and you can drift the car a little wide on the exit.
The track is slightly off-camber and opens up a little in the middle of the
corner, then closes on the exit. Down to turn 2 is very heavy braking down
to 2nd gear but you can carry quite a bit of speed into here. The road
rises a little then drops and you tend to loose a bit of front-end grip
where the track drops away. This is quite a long corner and traction on the
exit can be a bit tricky as you enter the back straight. You are in top
gear doing 175 mph before it is back on the brakes for the right-hander.
This is a great corner. You can brake quite late and the road slopes down
off camber."
"After coming off the turn you have to get back to the right for turn five
where the track rises steeply up, then drops off again. A tricky
right-hander follows and it is a little bumpy - this corner is slower than
you would really like it. The elevation changes through here are far more
extreme than what they look like on television. The left-hand kink is a
blind corner and you must keep the car straight through here. You then run
up to turn ten and change back into third gear. After you brake and turn in,
the track really drops away on the exit before the right-hander at turn 11,
then heads back uphill again. It is quite bumpy on the entry here and quite
easy to overshoot the corner a little. There is a short squirt up to the
hairpin, which is a fairly tight right-hander. Once again the road drops
down as you run down through the left-hander back onto the pit straight for
another lap to begin."
