Developing a Vision for Future Global Systems of
Mobility
LONDON – 25 June 2002, The World Business Council for Sustainable Development is working to develop a vision for future, global systems of sustainable mobility. Frost & Sullivan has been engaged by the Fuels Workstream to bring together a broad-based view of the options for future fuels.
In 2001 the Sustainable Mobility Project reviewed and evaluated the current global position and seven grand challenges were identified:
1. Ensure the essential role of transport systems for economic and social development
2. Match the future use of automobile/transport with actual accessibility and needs
3. Re-invent public transport
4. Re-invent the process of planning, developing and managing mobility infrastructure
5. Drastic reduction of mobility’s carbon emissions
6. Resolve the competition for infrastructure use between personal and freight transport
7. Anticipate intercity congestion & develop mobility options for people and freight
The future of fuel is implicit in several of these challenges and it is central to achieving a drastic reduction of mobility’s carbon emissions. A project team (workstream) comprising BP, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Honda, Norsk Hydro, Nissan, Michelin, Renault, Shell, Toyota, and Volkswagen AG has been given the specific task of identifying and assessing the potential impact on sustainability of mobility of changes in fuels used in transport. Some of the issues to be examined include:
 What fuels will be available for transportation in general in 2030, what are their sources and their availability?
 How do these fuels compare in terms of their overall well-to-wheels energy and greenhouse gas emission profiles?
 What are the prospects for the production technologies for these fuels, their infrastructures and cost implications?
 What are the issues surrounding customer acceptance of these fuels?
 Are these fuels sustainable in terms of the resource base needed, environmental impact, ease of access and affordability?
The participants in the fuels workstream recognised that significant knowledge and important viewpoints lay outside the member companies. International market consultants Frost & Sullivan have been commissioned to synthesise knowledge both from existing literature and by interviewing experts both inside and outside the member companies. Frost & Sullivan will deliver a report on transportation fuels for 2030.
