Prolong Super Lubricants Named as Official Lubricant of the Prestigious Pikes Peak International Hill Climb; ESPN2 Coverage Scheduled
IRVINE, Calif.--June 25, 2002--Prolong Super Lubricants, Inc., operating subsidiary of Prolong International Corporation (AMEX:PRL), (http://www.prolong.com), today announced it will be a sponsor of the 80th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Race to the Clouds, on June 29th, 2002, and that it has been named Official Lubricant of the race. The race up the 14,110-foot world renowned Pikes Peak is the second oldest motor sports event in the U.S., with only the Indianapolis 500 having been raced longer."Motor sports is an excellent way to increase name recognition of our superior product line and to drive viewers to retail outlets which sell our products," said Prolong President and CEO Elton Alderman. "We have a strong tradition of involvement in motor sports because it helps develop customers and we are delighted to be a sponsor of such a prestigious event as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb."
ESPN2, which broadcasts to more than 70 million households, will carry segments of the separate race classes for stock cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles on its nationally televised auto, motorcycle and truck shows in numerous separate time slots in July, August and September. "This will give Prolong multiple exposures among race fans and casual observers," Mr. Alderman said.
Al Unser, four-time Indy 500 winner and official spokesperson for Prolong Super Lubricants, will watch his nephew, Robby Unser, son of Bobby Unser Sr. and eight-time winner over the snaking 12.42-mile, 156 turn course, drive the official pace car. "It's about you and the car and the mountain," says Robby Unser. "It's a magical, spiritual, special place. It teaches you about life and yourself." Together the Unser family has won 36 division championships and set 30 division records at Pikes Peak.
The racecourse, along unfenced, unpaved dirt roads, with cliffside hairpin turns, begins at an elevation of 9,200 feet and ends above the summit of Pikes Peak. It is completely surrounded by National Forest Land and roughly half the course is above the 11,000 feet tree line, finishing at the 14,100 foot peak. Clint Vahsholtz will be competing for his seventh consecutive victory in the stock car division and teams from Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi will race in the ProRally Championship.
"We believe that repeated TV exposure of the Prolong brand name plays an important part in increasing revenues," said Thomas Billstein, Prolong COO. "We successfully assisted in sponsoring this event once in the past and we are confident that this is an excellent, cost-effective way to increase exposure to the Prolong brand."
