Thomson leads after Mosport mastery

LONDON, ON - According to defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don
Thomson, it was his win at Kawartha Speedway, last summer, that propelled
him into contention in the points chase. And just two races after tasting
victory, Thomson assumed the top spot in his quest for his first Super
Series championship. It was a lead that he would never surrender.
With Saturday's win in the 'Exide presents the Mosport 250' at Mosport
Speedway, the Home Hardware Chevy racer again bolted to the top of the list
in the championship chase. As the 2002 series approaches its midway point,
Thomson is feeling comfortable and confident.
"That's where we want to be [first in points]. I'm pretty happy about it.
I didn't get excited after the first race at Delaware, when we finished
15th. We just decided to chop away at it, race by race. We tried a bunch of
different things in the first few outings, just trying to improve. But
we've come back to what works and it's paying dividends."
At Mosport, Thomson put on a display of dominance that is rarely ever seen
in a Super Series event. In the vast majority of races, the margin of
victory is less than a fraction of a second. At Mosport, Thomson's
advantage was over half a lap on Dave Whitlock, his closest competitor.
Thomson's post-race comment, "For the last 30 laps, I was just cruising
around, saving my tires and brakes... I couldn't believe the way we were
able to stretch it out" must have been particularly disheartening for the
rest of the field, several of whom literally burned the brakes and tires
off their cars in a futile attempt to run with the leader.
The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place this coming Sunday night at
Cayuga Speedway. After freshening his motor, Thomson will take the same
chassis and engine combination to the 5/8-mile oval that proved so
successful at Mosport on Saturday night. In addition to showing well in the
race, which will feature five Winston Cup regulars and Craftsman Truck
Series standout Ted Musgrave, Thomson will be looking to avenge his
second-place finish in last year's Cayuga outing. In that race, Dave
Whitlock passed Thomson on the last lap to nab the win.

CASCAR NOTES: During qualifying for Saturday's Exide presents the Mosport
250, Skoal Inc. Chevy racer Neil Fair joined polesitter Pete Vanderwyst in
recording a sub-22-second lap around the half-mile oval... Wade Lee won
Saturday night's CASCAR Western Series event at Calgary's Race City
Speedway, the multi-time series champion came home ahead of Don Sales and
Daryl Harr... The CASCAR CARQUEST Sportsman Series was busy this past
weekend, holding a pair of 100 lap races. On Friday night at Delaware
Speedway, Doug Brown showed the way, beating Sportsman rookie Jason
Hathaway and Jim Patrick. And on Saturday night at Montreal's Autodrome
St-Eustache, Quebec racing legend Richard Beauchamp led from lap 19 through
to the checkered flag at lap 100, holding off Jim Patrick and Daniel
Charest for the win.
