Delphi to provide complete EMS for Hyundai's new V-6 engine

TROY, Mich., June 24 -- Hyundai Motor Corporation has given Delphi Corporation a letter of intent to purchase approximately U.S. $400 million of complete engine management systems for the automaker's new V-6 engine, Delphi officials said today.

Production on Hyundai's new V-6 engine is expected to begin in Korea in the near future. Between now and then, Delphi will invest U.S. $20 million at EMS facilities in Korea and North America to support Hyundai.

"Hyundai is one of the fastest growing car companies in the world, and we are committed to providing the best technical and manufacturing support as they seek to expand their global market share," said Steve Kiefer, EMS business line executive, Delphi.

Engine management is the science of equipping and calibrating an engine to achieve clean exhaust emissions while providing the best possible performance, fuel economy and drivability.

For Hyundai's V-6 engine, Delphi will provide an engine management system that features the powertrain control module, and the complete engine control system, which includes the integrated air-fuel module, cam-phasers, injection system and sensors.

The letter of intent continues Delphi's growth with its EMS product line. Worldwide in 2001, Delphi booked new orders for EMS worth more than U.S. $500 million. The Asia-Pacific region generated much of this new business, driven by evolving concern for improved air quality in high-density, developing countries, Kiefer said.

Delphi employs approximately 4,200 permanent employees in Korea with its six joint ventures and one wholly-owned operation. The six joint ventures include: Korea Delphi Automotive Components Co., Ltd. (KDAC), Shin Sung Packard Co., Ltd. (SSP), KDS Co., Ltd., Delkor Corp., Daesung Electric Co., Ltd., Delphi Diesel Systems Korea Ltd.

Since its launch in Korea, Delphi is committed to meeting Korean original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) requirements for localized components, technology leadership, systems support, and a global support network to assist customers in their global expansion. Work is under way to develop Korean joint ventures to become full systems suppliers with local systems development capability in key globally competitive areas. Delphi's customer base in Korea includes all major Korean OEMs.
