NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals Qualifying Saturday - June 22, 2002

The 18th Annual NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals, presented by Ford Racing, Holley, and 5.0 Mustang, has kicked off in grand style, with perfect weather, huge fields of both heads-up and bracket cars, and tons of spectators here at Maple Grove Raceway.

The biggest class of all was Toyo Tires Open Comp, which packed the staging lanes with 59 cars! Other big classes include NItto Tires Truck & Lightning (16 trucks), Vortech Modular Muscle (23 cars), BFGoodrich Drag Radial (21 cars), 5.0 Mustang Real Street (19 cars), Edelbrock Hot Street (22 cars), ProCharger EFI Renegade (19 cars), and MSD Super Street Outlaw (21 ten-inch-tire freaks). In total, there were over 230 heads up competitors in the 10 classes, and 275 Superchips Bracket cars.

Mr. Gasket Pro 5.0 saw Billy Glidden grab the top spot with a 6.87/200, but right on his heels was Chuck Samuel with a 6.88/207. Jim Summers and the 2000 class champion, Joe DaSilva, both made their first NMRA race with their brand-new cars. Also, Wild Bill Devine has his newly-painted Mustang on the property.
