Thomson dominates at Mosport Speedway

OSHAWA, ON - On Saturday night, defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don
Thomson Jr. took to the half-mile Mosport Speedway oval and thoroughly
dominated the 'Exide presents the Mosport 250'. The result came six days
after the Home Hardware Chevy driver finished second on the road course at
Mosport Int'l Raceway.
On the strength of those finishes, Thomson has moved to the top of the
unofficial Super Series points chase, following five events. After starting
third in the field of 33 competitors, Thomson took the lead for the second
time on lap 185 of the 250-lap event. Once in front, he was able to put
significant gaps between himself and the rest of the field, en route to
collecting his first checkered flag of the season.
In the end, Dave Whitlock and several others were left to fight for
second. Whitlock's Fast Lane Taurus came home in the runner-up position,
almost 13 seconds behind Thomson. The three-time National champion was able
to withstand the pain of a burned foot, which was the result of high
temperatures at the floor of his racecar. Ron Beauchamp Jr. made a dramatic
pass on Scott Steckly, late in the race, to take the final podium position,
in his Mopar Intrepid.

CASCAR NOTES: During qualifying for the 'Exide presents the Mosport 250',
Pete Vanderwyst's Exide Pontiac circled the half-mile oval in a time of
21.962 seconds, to take the all-time CASCAR lap record away from Peter
Gibbons, who posted a lap of 22.092 in 2000. Vanderwyst's time trial effort
earned him the distinction of being the only CASCAR racer ever to have
circled Mosport Speedway in less than 22 seconds... The top 20 qualifiers
during time trials lined up, in order, on the starting grid for the 250-lap
race. The remainder of the field was determined based on the results of the
15-lap Final Qualifier race... Kevin Dowler, the winner of the CASCAR Super
Series race at the Mosport Int'l Raceway road course the previous Sunday,
won the Final Qualifier sprint. The Edmontonian successfully held off Dave
Jacombs and Jim Lapcevich.

CASCAR BROADCASTS: The second race of the CASCAR Super Series season, the
Logel's Auto Parts 200 from Peterborough Speedway, will have its inaugural
airing on Sportsnet on Monday, June 24. The race, which was won by Castrol
Intrepid driver DJ Kennington, will be on at 8:00 p.m. in the EAST, ONTARIO
and WEST regions, and at 5:00 p.m. in the PACIFIC zone. It will be shown
again on Tuesday (June 25) afternoon in all of the above regions.
