Scheffler Tops UMP Late Model
Feature at Hales Corners Speedway
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 22-Russ Scheffler picked up the win in the UMP late
model feature on N&S Towing Night Saturday at the Hales Corners Speedway.
T.J. Dolhun sprinted out to a big lead in the early laps of the 30-lap
headliner as Scheffler steadily worked his way through the pack from his
eighth-place starting position. A caution flag at lap 11 put Scheffler, now
second, right on Dolhun's rear bumper for the restart.
When the race resumed, Scheffler needed just a lap and a half before
zooming past Dolhun using the outer groove up the backstretch on lap 12.
Both Jimmy Watson and Bret Sievert also got past Dolhun to run second and
third, respectively, by lap 18.
Another yellow on lap 20 bunched the field once again and when the race
resumed, Sievert got by Watson for second on lap 22. Sievert closed the gap
to the front running car of Scheffler down to just a car length, but at lap
26 Scheffler began to stretch his advantage. Scheffler pulled away in the
final few circuits to pick up the win with Sievert second, Watson third,
Chris Carlson fourth and Matt Schultz fifth.
Don Sorce Jr. took the lead on lap 17 and went on to win the 20-lap
sportsmen feature. Roger Lee pipped Jeff Tondryk at the flagstand for
second, with Eddie Lemay Jr. third and Dave Thomas fourth.
Jim Zdroik topped the 20-lap modified feature over Mike Knurr. Brian
Crapser placed third, with Joe McGrath fourth and Jason Zdroik fifth.
Pat Heaney won the second round of the N&S Towing Hales Whales Triple
crown. Barry Cates finished second with Joe Altenhofen third.
