CASCAR - Points and Mosport Wrap

June 18, 2002

Points deadlocked at the top after Mosport road course race

LONDON, ON - Sunday's CASCAR Super Series race at Mosport served to
dramatically tighten the championship points race, as the series completed
the first third of its 2002 campaign. Following the fourth race of the
season, NTN Taurus racer Mark Dilley has climbed into a tie with Castrol
Intrepid driver DJ Kennington, who has led the points since winning Round
#2 at Peterborough Speedway, on May 26. Both drivers have been extremely
consistent so far this season.
In Dilley's case, the Barrie, ON racer has recorded two thirds and two
fourths in '02; an incredible feat considering the highly competitive
nature of the series.
Kennington's 11th-place result in the rain-shortened Mosport road course
event opened the door for Dilley to narrow the points gap to zero.
"We learned a lot today about what to do and what not to do in the rain,"
said Dilley, after the race. "Finishing the race was key, and that is what
we were aiming for. We did what we had to do from our sixth place start,
taking on the rain tires early was a gamble that paid off."
Dilley's point about the benefit to those who stopped for grooved 'wet'
tires was underlined by the fact that the top four finishers at Mosport had
come in earlier to shed their slick tires. Al Turner's fifth-place finish,
in his Blue Streak Intrepid, was the best result by a driver not to have
done so.
"I understand that CASCAR had a lot of tough decisions to make today,"
said Turner, after the race. "I wouldn't want to have been in their shoes.
It's a difficult day for everybody. There are sponsors here and they have
to be considered. NAPA is good enough to be back on this race and they,
along with the fans and the track promoter have to be considered. There are
a lot of people you've got to try and make happy."
Also creeping forward in the points is Home Hardware Chevy driver Don
Thomson, who came home second at Mosport. After finishing 15th in the
season opener at Delaware, the defending Super Series champion has been
very strong, and after four races, finds himself within striking distance
of the top. Thomson is third overall, just eight markers back of Kennington
and Dilley.

CASCAR NOTES: CASCAR would like to thank the many media outlets that have
been making use of the race results. To name just a few, the Globe & Mail
and the Toronto Sun published the results of Sunday's Mosport race in their
Monday editions... Coverage of the opening round of the 2002 CASCAR Super
Series will be rebroadcast Tuesday on Sportsnet. Viewers in the ONTARIO (4
p.m.), WEST (5 p.m.) and PACIFIC (5 p.m.) regions can catch the racing
action from the May19 event at Delaware Speedway.
