Dowler wins soggy NAPA 250 at Mosport

OSHAWA, ON - The CASCAR Super Series held its first ever race in wet
conditions, on Sunday afternoon, at Mosport Int'l Raceway. The 'NAPA
presents the Clarington 250' was initially scheduled for 64 laps around the
10-turn road course, but rain throughout the afternoon cut that distance in
half.
Kevin Dowler of Edmonton, AB was one of a handful of racers who ducked
into the pits on lap 18 to put on grooved 'rain' tires, while many others
soldiered on using traditional 'slick' tires. The strategy of those who
decided not to stop appeared to be the way to go, until the rain
intensified following a lengthy stoppage at lap 27. Back under green flag
conditions, Dowler and the others quickly carved through the pack ahead of
them and by lap 29, leaders Peter Gibbons and Jeff Lapcevich could no
longer stay on the track.
Lapcevich slid into a gravel trap, while Gibbons crashed hard into the
wall on the front-straight, just as Dowler was passing him at the end of
lap 29.
At the finish, Dowler led defending Super Series champion Don Thomson, and
Dave Jacombs, across the line, as they were shown the yellow and checkered
flags, to end the race after 32 laps. All three drivers had stopped for
'rain' tires earlier in the event.
The next CASCAR Super Series race is next Saturday at the Mosport Speedway
oval, located just to the west of the road course. Mark Dilley is the
defending winner of that event.
