TREMONT BANKS HISTORIC 100TH CAREER VICTORY AT THE VALLEY

June 15, 2002, West Lebanon, NY- Kenny Tremont Jr made history at Lebanon
Valley Speedway Saturday night by winning the 30-lap modified feature. That
victory allowed Tremont to join a very elite list of drivers to reach one
hundred career victories at a single speedway. K.C. Goewey became the first
repeat winner in the sportsman division. Bob Duzlak captured the 20-lap Pro
Stock feature race. Henry Warner won the Rookie Pro Stock feature. KEY BANK
and HEAVY HAULERS brought us this night of racing at Lebanon Valley.
Twenty-eight cars started the 30-lap modified feature Saturday night. Two
drivers that had to start at the rear of the field were Sparky Lowe and Brett
Hearn. The two drivers were cited for rough riding in their heat race and
that was their punishment. Ron Blake was the early race leader and would hold
the top spot until lap eight. There was side by side racing action throughout
the pack, making it difficult to know where to watch. Tremont was charging to
the front in a hurry as he was up to fifth by lap three. Chris Moore moved
his Overbaugh Trucking #10 into third on a lap four restart. John Alberti,
Moore and Tremont went three-wide for third on lap six with Moore grabbing
the upper hand and Tremont taking over third. Moore and Tremont ran down
Blake and the battle for the lead was on. Tremont split Blake and Moore
coming off of turn two and assumed the lead in lap eight, with Blake in
second.
Disaster struck on just before the halfway point at lap 14. Several cars
came together on the frontstretch and there was carnage everywhere. Denny
Soltis and Donnie Corellis seemed to suffer the most damage to their racers,
but fortunately all the drivers walked away from the scene. Rich Ricci Jr was
also involved in the melee. Ricci had his throttle stick in the heat race and
suffered severe front-end damage. The crew worked feverishly to repair the
car and got it back together with just seconds to spare before the start of
the feature. Ricci would be able to continue in the event and finished a very
respectable ninth.
At the halfway point it was Tremont, J.R. Heffner, Eddie Marshall, Moore
and Matt Quinn. Hearn cracked the top five for the first time on lap 16 and
he was not done there. Hearn was easily one of the fastest cars on the track
in the later stages and was bale to get by Heffner for second with two laps
to go. But it was too late to try and run down Tremont as he captured his
fourth victory of the season. Tremont's first career modified victory came at
Lebanon Valley on May 29th, 1982. After the feature Tremont said he had
trouble wondering if he would ever win one feature and now there have been
one hundred. Tremont stated that this was one of the goals that he had set
for the 2002 season and that one of the only goals that he has left on his
list is to win the overall Mr. DIRT Modified Championship before his career
is over. Tremont now has a six-point lead over Hearn in the point standings
at the Valley. Heffner, Marshal and Moore rounded out the top five on
Saturday night.
Willie Galm led the first half of the 20-lap Sportsman feature on
Saturday night. Ed Harkins took second away from Mike Keeler on lap five.
K.C. Goewey also made his way around Keeler and moved into third on lap six.
There were several cautions during the first half of the vent that kept
grouping the field back together. Keeler was able to get back up to second
after a lap seven restart, but give it up to Goewey after a lap nine restart.

As the field came down to the halfway signal Goewey took the lead from
Galm. Ryan Larkin had a strong run going until he got mud in his right rear
tire on lap eleven. Bobby Knipe worked his way up to third by lap 14 and was
battling Keeler hard for second on lap 17. The two drivers got hooked
together and almost caused a huge pileup. The drivers behind them did a great
job of avoiding the joined cars. While under the caution the third place car
of Galm retired from the event. That now put last week's winner, Lorne Browe,
into the second position. Browe could not mount a strong enough challenge as
Goewey hung on for the victory. Frank Harper got passed Jeff Watson at the
line for third and Art Collins rounded out the top five. This was the second
year in a row that Goewey has won on Father's Day Weekend.
Problems for the point leader in the 20-lap Pro Stock feature right at
the beginning of the race. Jim Lagenback got spun around in turn four and
restarted in the rear. A flat tire late in the race relegated Lagenback to
13th in the finishing order. Adam Haas led the first lap of the race. He
would lose the top spot to Bob Duzlak in a great three-way battle for the
lead that also included Rich Colesanti. Duzlak was able to open up a
twenty-car advantage over Haas by lap seven. Al Blackburn made his way passed
Haas on lap seven for second. Haas continued to slide back as Rob Yetman
moved into third on lap eight. Blackburn and Yetman raced side by side for
several laps until they made contact on lap 12 giving Yetman a right front
flat tire. On the restart Blackburn put heavy pressure on Duzlak for the
lead, but he tried too hard in turn three and spun out.
The driver on the move in the final stages of the race was Yetman. He
took fourth on lap 17, third on lap 18 and second on lap 19. But he could not
catch Duzlak in time and had to settle for second. Ironically while it was
Goewey's second Father' Day Weekend victory in a row it was Duzlak's third
Father's Day Weekend victory in a row. Maybe their father's both appreciate a
trip to victory lane as their Father's Day gift.
It was truly a historic night at the track. Those fans that braved the
elements were certainly rewarded for their efforts. Henry Warner won the
Rookie race while Randy Myers, Robert Gibson, Ron Tritschler and Jason Casey
were victorious in the Pure Stock class. Laura Saunders won the Ladies
Cannonball and Rick Dempsey won the 1st ever Midnight Run race. Cannonball
cars with headlights racing with the speedway lights turned off. Man was that
fun to watch.
Lebanon Valley Speedway will be back in action next Saturday night June 22nd
with a full card of racing plus Kiddie Rides. Please note the early start
time for Warm-ups at 5pm sharp. Kids must be in line at the starter's stand
at 5:45pm In order to get a ride.
