Portland (Ore.) International Raceway - 1.969-Mile Road Course
Round 6 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola improved
one spot on the starting grid for Sunday's G.I. Joe's 200 after final
qualifying today at Portland International Raceway. Kanaan recorded a fast
lap of 59.629 seconds (119.875 mph) over the 1.969-mile road course, which
earned him the 14th starting position Sunday and is one spot better than the
provisional qualifying position he earned on Friday.
Provisional polesitter Cristiano da Matta bettered his time from Friday and
held onto the pole position for Sunday's race with a fast lap of 58.679
seconds (120.800 mph). Kenny Brack will start second after a fast lap today
of 58.963 seconds (120.218 mph), followed by teammate Bruno Junqueira in the
third position with a lap of 59.026 seconds (120.089 mph). The top three
are Toyota-powered Lolas. Dario Franchitti, the top-qualifying Honda who
was fourth in provisional qualifying Friday, ended up seventh after today's
session with a lap of 59.365 seconds (119.404 mph).
Race time Sunday is 12:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. EDT) with a live

TONY KANAAN QUOTES
"It's very unusual for us to be in a position like this, so, obviously, we'
re all a little frustrated right now. Somehow, we're just not understanding
what we need to make the car get around this track better. We're making
progress, but so is everybody else. That's what happens when you have as
little experience with the car as we do with this one. This is only our
second road course race with this car, and we sure could have used some
testing before we ever started running these cars. As it was, we were able
to do none. But, I guess we knew what we were getting ourselves into when
we made the decision to switch chassis in the middle of the season. We can
only get better with time. We'll have our good moments, like we did last
weekend at Laguna Seca, where we qualified fourth. But, unfortunately, we'
re bound to have some frustrating times, too. Maybe things will turn out
the opposite of how they've been going. We've had good Fridays and
Saturdays and have been snake bit on Sundays this season. Maybe this
weekend will have a happy ending for us. We can only hope so."
