DEMOLITION DERBY - IRWINDALE JUNE 15

SEASON'S FIRST DEMOLITION DERBY WILL CAP-OFF NIGHT
OF AUTO-EXCITEMENT AT IRWINDALE ON SATURDAY JUNE 15
Father's Day Fun for Everyone

Irwindale, Calif. - - Fans of the fine and ancient art of the "DD" should make plans to be on hand at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday night, June 15, that's when a night of NASCAR racing action spiced up by a Figure 8 Race will be topped off with the first Demolition Derby of the year. Known in some quarters as a "Destruction Derby", the first place trophy and a check for $1000 in this metallic contest will go to "the last man (or woman as the case may be) standing", as the object is to destroy by whatever means possible, the other driver's car, while at the same time, keeping your machine in some semblance of working order. (No hand grenades or flame-throwers allowed, no concrete-filled doors or bumpers either … You've only got your car as a weapon here.)

For those looking to do something just a little bit different to celebrate Father's Day this year (that's Sunday the 16th by the way) a night at Irwindale Speedway will not only fill the bill but give both the giver and the receiver an unforgettable night of car-craziness.

The fine folks of Pick-Your-Part will kindly sponsor both the Figure 8 and DD, lending their names to the title of each event, as well as providing much of the rolling stock offered up for "sacrifice" the two divisions.

Of course, in the PYP Figure 8 race drivers want to remain unscathed and get to the finish line first after navigating lap after lap through the cross-roads of conflict in the center of the "8"-shaped "oval with an intersection" course. And these cars are no "junk yard dogs". Take a closer look at them during the King Taco On-Track Autograph Session. These are sleek, specially designed and constructed thoroughbreds, made to turn left and right on the figure 8, and bred to have horrendous horsepower (all the better to accelerate through the cross-hairs … Er crossROADS), with wings and things and steely-eyed drivers who scare at nothing and whose biggest thrill is hearing the crowd gasp and squeal over the sound of the motors as they tempt fate (and getting T-Boned big time) on every lap.

As to the "Art" of driving (surviving) in the PYP DD event, the rules are simple: "Do unto others before they can do unto you …". Actually, it's all in the spirit of good fun and showmanship, and everyone at the track, no matter how sophisticated and steeped in racing traditions, secretly wishes that they could just take a couple of whacks in one of those cars themselves. Its great good fun for all and yields a batch of retired racing machines that are elegantly easier stack on the flatbed at the end of the night … What more could anyone want?

And for the "purists", we have three great NASCAR races divided among two of the Speedway's favorite divisions: the Vista Paint Super Stocks and the Jani-King Super Late Models. Twin 50-lappers (each paying full season points) for the Super Late Models and 40 laps for those hammering Super Stocks. Rest assured that the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge will be looking good again (as usual) on Saturday night!

Again, Irwindale's wildly-popular KING TACO PRE-RACE/ON-TRACK-AUTOGRAPH SESSION will (of course) be part of the event's activities for the Featherlite night. Fans are cordially invited right down on the track's front straight to meet all of the night's contestants and get a touch-close look at their machines. This stupendous session is open to all, young and old and adds immeasurably to the "close-up and personal" experience that fans get only at Irwindale Speedway. It happens between 6 and 6:30pm and is a MUST BE AT IS event for everyone new fans and old hands alike. It's something really special that watching a car race on TV can never equal and it's part of every race at Irwindale Speedway.

Gates open at 4PM and racing starts at 7PM, but the "party" in between (live band, face-painting for the "kids", the on-track autograph session) is something that really adds to the value of a fan's hard-earned ticket money. Tickets are available by secure on-line (www.irwindalespeedway.com) transaction, by phone (626) 358-1100, and at the track ticket office.

Another added "early-bird special" this season is the opportunity for one lucky (and brave) fan to get a thrill ride around the half-mile banked oval in the Performance Race Training Center's 2-seat NASCAR-style 500-horsepower stock car. Fans arriving prior to 7PM will be invited to put their names into a drawing for the ride that runs right after the trophy dash. The question for the fortunate fan is: "Really now, how long CAN you hold your breath?
