Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola sit
fourth on the provisional starting grid for Sunday's Bridgestone Grand Prix
of Monterey after today's first-round qualifying session.  Kanaan toured the
2.238-mile Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca hillside road course with a fast lap
of 1 minute, 10.264 seconds (113.665 mph) during today's 60-minute group
qualifying session.  It was the first outing on a road course for the team's
new Lola chassis.  The team switched from Reynard for the first time last
weekend on the Milwaukee Mile oval after having run Reynards for the first
two-plus years of the team's existence.

The 27-year-old Kanaan also unveiled a brand new helmet color scheme this
weekend, featuring the familiar stripes of his previous helmet design but
with the green and gold colors of the national flag of his native Brazil.

Sitting right in front of Kanaan on the provisional starting grid are Kenny
Brack, the fastest qualifier at 1:10.066 (114.989 mph), followed by
Cristiano da Matta at 1:10.103 (114.928 mph) and Patrick Carpentier at
1:10.218 (114.740 mph).

Practice continues Saturday morning with final qualifying set for 1:45 p.m.
local time (4:45 p.m. EDT).  Speed Channel will carry it live.  Race time
Sunday is 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. EDT), and Speed Channel, again,
will carry all the action live.

"Well, you can never say you're satisfied in this business, but I think we'
re very pleased with our very first day on a road course for our
Pioneer-WorldCom Lola.  I really have to take my hat off to all the guys for
a tremendous job, especially Iain (Watt, engineer), (team owner) Morris
(Nunn), and Donnie (Lambert, crew chief).  We're the fastest Honda out
there, which is always our first goal.  The most important thing is that we'
re going consistently fast.  That's a good feeling that you can come to a
track and run well from the very start of the weekend.  Now, the job will be
to stay on top of the conditions and keep improving on what we've got.  So
far, so good.  As for my helmet, everybody thinks I've got World Cup fever
or something.  Actually, it's a design I was looking to introduce at the
Indy 500, but we didn't get it in time.  So, since we're desperately looking
for a change in our luck after four straight DNFs, I'm hoping it becomes my
new lucky charm."
