Timothy E. Lee Named Successor as GM Europe Vice President of Manufacturing
DETROIT- James R. Wiemels, currently GM Vice President of Manufacturing in Europe, will return to the United States where he will focus on the global integration of GM's manufacturing process before being assigned to a key-operating role in GM North America. Wiemels will report to Gary L. Cowger, president of GM North America.
Effective June 1, 2002, Timothy E. Lee succeeds Wiemels at GM Europe. In his new capacity, Lee will be responsible for the overall coordination of all Opel, Vauxhall and Saab vehicle manufacturing and assembly plants in Europe.
Prior to his current assignment in Europe, Wiemels, 56, had been Chairman and Managing Director of Holden Ltd., GM's Australian subsidiary, since 1997. He has been a vice president of General Motors Corporation since 1994. Lee, 51, has an extensive background in manufacturing, joining GM in 1969.
Throughout his career with GM, he has held a number of senior management positions in the manufacturing area, including executive vice president, manufacturing, for GM's Saturn Division and most recently, executive director, manufacturing engineering, for GM's entire North American Operations.
In addressing the moves, Cowger said, "Jim Wiemels brings a wealth of experience to our global manufacturing integration process. His participation in the streamlining and transforming of our European production facilities has resulted in an increase in flexibility, quality, adaptability and efficiency. Tim Lee's industry experience and his track record can only build on the solid foundation Jim and his team has created."
