PRESS RELEASE: Last-minute entry adds spice to RSAC Scottish Rally

Last-minute entry by former champion adds further spice to RSAC Scottish
Rally

The last minute entry of 1997 British Rally Champion Mark Higgins in a
Toyota Corolla WRC adds further interest to this weekend¹s RSAC Scottish
Rally, with its 175crew international field.

Mark telephoned from the USA where was competing last weekend to ask
Clerk of the Course Jonathan Lord of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club if
he could get a last-minute entry for this weekend¹s British Championship
round in Dumfries. The entry, with co-driver Michael Gibson has now been
confirmed by fax.

The crew will be slotted into the entry list at 28, but will be moved up the
starting order before High Street start in Dumfries on Saturday morning.
Brother David Higgins is already on the entry list at number 13 in his
Subaru Impreza. The brothers Higgins will be trying to make sure that
Finland's Tapio Laukkanen does not take his third victory on the RSAC
Scottish Rally but rather that one or other of them enjoys the victory
champagne when the cars return to Dumfries on Sunday afternoon.

Though still only 31, Mark Higgins has packed a huge amount of success into
his rallying career. Born on the Isle of Man, where motor sport is such a
part of the local culture it is perhaps not surprising that the brothers
turned to rallying.

Mark¹s first victories came at the wheel of a kart at 16, but it wasn¹t long
before the lure of rallying proved too great. With his mother, Christina, in
the co-driver¹s seat, Mark Higgins took the Manx rallies by storm in the
late Œ80s and early Œ90s.

A series of class wins in the British Championship followed during 1991, Œ92
and Œ93, and then Mark won the British Junior Championship title in 1994 and
the British Championship crown in 1997.
