Whitlock wins rain-shortened race at St-Eustache

MONTREAL, QC - Dave Whitlock started on the pole in Saturday night's
AUTOPRO / NAPA 150 CASCAR Super Series race at Autodrome St-Eustache. And
when the red flag flew for rain on lap 97, ending the race, the Ford Fast
Lane Taurus driver was back in the lead and became the third different
winner in as many races held this season.
Defending Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. jumped to the lead
at the initial green flag, in his Home Hardware Chevy, and led the way for
two laps of side-by-side action with Whitlock, after which the Ford driver
nosed ahead of Thomson and took the lead for good. With lightning flashing
in the sky all around the Montreal-area oval, the teams jockeyed for
position past the halfway mark of the 150-lap event, knowing that the skies
would soon open, probably ending the event.
At lap 90, Whitlock held a comfortable lead over a group made up
of Pete Vanderwyst, Peter Gibbons and Don Thomson. Rain started to fall two
laps later. With the grip deteriorating under the slick tires, Gibbons'
Canadian Tire Chevy tagged Vanderwyst's Exide Pontiac as the field slid
through turn 2, turning Vanderwyst into the infield grass.
Vanderwyst quickly recovered, but lost several positions. Gibbons
was assessed a penalty for the contact and was scored at the end of the
other lead lap drivers, when the red flag came out on lap 97. With
Vanderwyst and Gibbons out of the equation, Thomson moved to second place,
while the Castrol SYNTEC Intrepid of DJ Kennington took third.
Mark Dilley missed finishing third - for the third race in a row -
by just one position. Al Turner's Blue Streak Intrepid was fifth.

CASCAR NOTES: Dave Whitlock sat on the pole for the AUTOPRO / NAPA 150
after posting a time of 18.234 seconds around the 4/10-mile St-Eustache
oval. Defending Super Series champion Don Thomson was second quickest in
time trials, with his lap of 18.257 seconds. Thomson set the CASCAR Super
Series qualifying track record at St-Eustache with a lap of 18.009, which
he recorded in 2000... John Fitzpatrick cruised to victory in the 25-lap
Final Qualifiers' race, for those who qualified out of the top 16 for the
AUTOPRO / NAPA 150. Robin Buck was second in the sprint, ahead of Scott
Steckly.
