CAN'T STOP KIMMEL IN KANSAS
KANSAS CITY, KS (6-1-02) Stuart Kirby was coming, but not in time to
catch Frank Kimmel who cruised under the checkered flag as winner of the
BPU 200 Saturday at Kansas Speedway. It was Kimmel’s 37th career ARCA
RE/MAX Series victory and fourth in the last five events.
“I’m sure he (Kirby) was trying everything he could,” said Kimmel.
“There at the end he was a little quicker. I didn’t want him to get any
closer that’s for sure. But these young kids are extremely good racers;
you know they’re up on the wheel trying to beat you. The more you win,
the more they start coming after you. Ask those guys who they want to
beat the most; it’s us.”
Kirby, who had just passed Damon Lusk for second with less than ten laps
remaining, was slowly gaining on the eventual winner but ran out of time
crossing the final stripe nearly two seconds behind Kimmel.
“We had a car for Frank there at the end,” said Kirby. “We were running
two or three tenths quicker. We could run with him there at the end, but
just got behind a car. If we could have got some more laps we definitely
could have made a run at him.”
While Kirby may have been a tick quicker in the end, it was still
Kimmel, in Larry Clement’s familiar #46 Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford,
who dominated the day with a whopping 99 laps-led of the 134 that made
up the 200-mile race.
Lusk, who led 10 laps in Steve Palac’s Dynatek-One Race America
Chevrolet, finished third with leading Rookie of the Year contender Chad
Blount trailing in fourth in Todd Braun’s InvisibleGlass.com Dodge. Andy
Belmont, in his own Odoban Wheel Control Ford, finished fifth.
In all, there were ten lead changes among six drivers while six caution
periods slowed the event for 28 laps. There were no injuries.
Kirby, making his first appearance in Ted Campbell’s CLR Ford, made an
additional, unscheduled pit stop out of sequence with the leaders in an
effort to cure a loose condition. Yet, in the end, the Bowling Green,
Kentucky driver charged back and led nine laps putting himself in
contention to win.
Chase Montgomery, who finished 12th, led eight laps while Belmont and
Blount each led four.
Mark Gibson, in the Williams Brothers Lumber Ford, was in the hunt all
afternoon and finished sixth in front of 16-year-old Shelby Howard who
steered the iHigh.com Chevrolet to the finish in seventh. Lamont,
California driver Mike Duncan, making his career-first RE/MAX Series
start, finished eighth, the last car on the lead lap while Kevin
Belmont, in James Hylton’s Ford, finished a career-best ninth. Mel Walen
finished tenth in the Rob Totenhagen Ford, also a career-best.
Kansas City, Kansas local favorite Jennifer Jo Cobb, in Doug Keller’s
Pontiac with sponsorship from local Pontiac dealer Roberts-Albright,
gave her hometown constituency something to cheer about with a
respectable 16th place finish in her career-first start.
In addition to winning the Old Milwaukee Pole Award, the 24th of his
career, Kimmel also picked up the Loctite Halfway Leader Award. Todd
Bowsher won the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger Award for advancing the most
positions, from 31st to 15th.
