FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASCHENBACH COMPLETES SWEEP AT MILWAUKEE DOUBLEHEADER

WEST ALLIS, WIS. (June 1, 2002) –Lawson Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md.,
won Round Seven of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship at the
Milwaukee Mile. Completing the top-three was JW Urlin, of London, Ont.,
Can., and Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill.
Racing in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, the Zetec Championship
had its most exciting race to date. At the green flag the field went three
abreast down the front straight and into turn one. Exiting turn two,
Kasemets, in the No. 9 MK Ind/Flexovit/TMI/Red Line Oil Pabst Racing
Services Van Diemen Ford, had taken the lead ahead of Urlin and Aschenbach.
On the following lap, Urlin got a good draft on Kasemets and passed for the
lead. Driving the No. 19 Budget Rent-A-Car/Mygale Cars Mygale Ford, Urlin
began to pull away from Kasemets almost immediately. As Urlin stretched his
lead, Kasemets came under attack from Aschenbach. On lap 4, Aschenbach
passed Kasemets and began his charge to the front. On lap 10, a full-course
yellow was displayed, as Jon Groom made contact with the outside wall in
turn two, bunching the field back together. On the lap 17 restart, Urlin got
a good jump and retained the lead into turn one, while Kasemets pressured
Aschenbach for second place. Aschenbach held off the challenge and quickly
began to close on Urlin. On lap 23, Urlin, battling a loose car, made an
error exiting turn two and Aschenbach passed for the lead. For the remainder
the race the top-three stayed unchanged, as Aschenbach stretched his lead on
Urlin. At the checkered flag, Aschenbach had won both rounds of the
doubleheader at the Milwaukee Mile and captured the Road To Indy Oval Crown
Championship, 82-73, over Urlin.
“This was a flawless weekend,” said Aschenbach. “I didn’t get the start I
wanted, but knew I had a good car. I worked on setting a good rhythm and
when JW [Urlin] made that little mistake I just went for it. I’m really
looking forward to the rest of the season and challenging for the title.”
“This feels great,” said Urlin. “As I’ve been saying a lot recently, we
keep progressing and learning each race. I really wanted to win the oval
crown championship, but Lawson [Aschenbach drove a great race. I was
battling a loose car and he capitalized on my mistake. Still it’s nice to
show well here in front of the CART community.”
“Overall this was a good weekend,” said Kasemets. “We made some changes
after yesterday’s race, unfortunately they weren’t the right changes. The
important thing is we managed to stay third and collect vital points in the
championship.”
Completing the top-five is Edouard Aube, of Montreal, Que., Can., capturing
a career best finish after starting eighth in the No. 22 PATTISON Richard
Morgan Racing Van Diemen Ford and Sean McIntosh, of Coquitlam, B.C., Can.,
who seventh in No. 24 Kirmac Carstar/PPG/Lordco Auto PR1 Motorsports Van
Diemen Ford.
