The Milwaukee Mile - West Allis, Wis. - 1-Mile Oval
Round 4 of 20 on the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series

Tony Kanaan and his brand new #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola
will start Sunday's Miller Lite 250 from the outside of the fourth row after
single-car qualifying here today on the Milwaukee Mile oval. Kanaan, who's
new car turned its first laps ever in practice yesterday, qualified eighth
on the grid with a fast lap of 22.398 seconds (165.872 mph). He started the
day with the third-fastest lap in morning practice. Kanaan and the team had
run Reynard chassis in the first two years of the team's existence before
making the switch to Lola this weekend. They will run the Lola for the
remainder of the season.

Adrian Fernandez, who was fastest in all three practice sessions this
weekend, earned the pole today with a qualifying lap of 22.176 seconds
(167.532 mph), and will be joined on the front row by Paul Tracy, who turned
a 22.205-second (167.314-mph) lap. Patrick Carpentier qualified third in
22.324 seconds (166.422 mph).

Race time Sunday is 11:30 a.m. local time (12:30 p.m. EDT) with a live
broadcast set for CBS-TV.

TONY KANAAN

"We've got to be reasonably pleased with how we're doing, all things
considered. We didn't turn a wheel on this car, really, until yesterday
afternoon, and here we were, third in practice this morning. So that was
very encouraging. We made a little change for qualifying that hurt us, I
think. Plus, the weather got hotter and the car picked up some understeer,
but that's the same for everybody. All in all, you've got to hand it to all
of my guys because they put in over 1,300 man hours since May 6 just to get
my Pioneer-WorldCom Lola ready for this weekend, and that's not counting all
the hours they put in at the (Indianapolis Motor) Speedway giving me
probably the best race car there was in the Indy 500 last Sunday. They've
had just one day off since we got back from Japan and they're exhausted, but
they just keep their heads down and keep at it, and the results are
definitely showing. We're learning more and more about this car every lap.
Tomorrow's another day, and we'll just have to keep improving. And
hopefully a little luck will finally come our way, too."
