ASCHENBACH CAPTURES FIRST POLE AT MILWAUKEE

WEST ALLIS, WIS. (May 31, 2002) –Lawson Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md.,
captured the pole for Round Six of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship at the Milwaukee Mile. Completing the top-three was Tonis
Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill. and Jon Groom, Boonton, N.J.
Under ideal weather conditions, qualifying for the 50-lap race was run in
the early afternoon. Drivers used the early part of the 20-minute qualifying
session to determine the level of grip available, after the CART teams had
gone out earlier in the day. As the session progressed, times began steadily
drop as teams fine-tuned their oval setup. At the midway point of the
session, Kasemets, in the No. 9 MK Ind/Flexovit/TMI/Red Line Oil Pabst
Racing Services Van Diemen Ford, ets/Sparco/Cape Motorsports Van Diemen
Ford, had posted the fastest lap of the session. Just behind Kasemets on the
time sheets was Groom, in the No. 14 Controlroomdesign.com/Up North
Productions Van Diemen Ford, who had been quickest in the Wednesday test
day. The duo remained at the top of the charts until, with 10 minutes
remaining, Aschenbach, in the No. 32 Forsythe/King Auto/M&M Welding PR1
Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, jumped to the top of the time sheets.
Aschenbach, who missed the Thursday test session, after attending a funeral
for a family friend who introduced Aschenbach to CART team owner Gerry
Forsythe, held the position until the checkered flag. The pole position,
with a time of 0:28.05 (132.23 mph), is the first of Aschenbach’s Zetec
Championship career.
“The team has given me a great car,” said Aschenbach. “After I missed the
test day on Thursday, Sean [McIntosh] did a great job setting up the car and
I used that setup. I’m really looking forward to the race and hopefully
things will go my way.”
“Everybody is doing a great job,” said Kasemets, who will have a large fan
base coming up from Chicago to support him. “It seems every time we find a
little more, he [Aschenbach] goes quicker. I think the race should be a good
battle.”
“The car has been great since we rolled it off the trailer,” said Groom,
who only got the car at Round Three at Mosport. “We’re getting better every
session and I’m looking forward to the race. The guys in the series are very
good and very professional.”
Completing the top-five for race one of the doubleheader is Bryan Sellers,
of Centerville, Ohio, in the No. 3 Yes Network/3 Dimensional
Services/Arai/Sparco Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford and Jeffrey Jones, of
Sarasota, Fla., in the No. 2 JCI Jones Chemicals/Winchester Cape Motorsports
Van Diemen Ford.
