General Motors Service Parts Operations Will Open In Reno

FOR RELEASE: May 29, 2002

GM Service Parts Operations Announces New Parts Distribution Center In Nevada

Reno, Nevada- General Motors Service Parts Operations has selected property in Reno (Stead) as the location of a new Parts Distribution Center (PDC). "This new PDC is an important part of SPO's strategy to provide world-class service to GM dealers by realigning the distribution network with less automated facilities featuring lean and common processes that achieve significant productivity improvements," said Charlie Hyndman, SPO director of warehousing and distribution for U.S. operations.

This new 404,000 square foot facility with an operating space of 384,000 square feet and office area at 20,000 square feet will handle automotive replacement part shipments to more than 239 GM dealerships in sections of California, Idaho, Nevada and Utah. Plans for construction of the new PDC will begin on May 28, 2002.

Hyndman said that several factors influenced the decision to locate the new facility in the Reno area. "The cooperative work between the leadership of UAW Local 2162 and Reno PDC management helped develop GM's business case with local, state and federal agencies," he explained. "We're also very sensitive to the impact on employees and their families and the community whenever we implement new business strategies to improve service to GM dealers."

"Local, state and federal considerations for funding support of employee training programs, infrastructure improvements and tax incentives were also instrumental in providing a favorable business case," said Ray Culbert, SPO Forward Planning manager. "U. S. Senator Harry Reid; Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin; Chuck Alvey (President & CEO, Reno-Sparks-Tahoe EDON); Mary Willett (Business Service Director, Reno-Sparks-Tahoe EDON); Bob Shriver (Executive Director, Nevada EDON); Tom Fitzgerald (CEO, NevadaWorks); and Krys Bart (Executive Director, Washoe County Airport Authority) worked with GM to acquire the necessary support and approvals to move this project forward. We look forward to continuing our strong association with them and the people in the Reno area."

SPO has opened several new PDCs around the country since 1999 -- Charlotte, N.C.; Jackson, Miss.; Los Angeles, Calif. (ACDelco); Memphis, Tenn.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Martinsburg, West Virginia; and in the Fort Worth, Texas area.

Construction of PDCs in the Philadelphia, Penn. area and Bolingbrook, Illinois has been completed. Currently, the PDCs are in the infrastructure installation phase and will be fully operational and shipping to customers during Summer 2002. November 27 marked the ground breaking for a new PDC in Rancho Cucamonga, California, which is expected to be shipping to customers early 2003.
