ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP ALUMNI CAPTURES INDIANAPOLIS 500 ROOKIE OF

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP ALUMNI CAPTURES INDIANAPOLIS 500 ROOKIE OF YEAR HONORS
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (May 28, 2002)—This past Sunday Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship alumni Alex Barron captured the Bank One Indianapolis 500
Rookie of the Year award.
In only his sixth Indy Racing League start, Barron drove a stunning race at
the 86th running of the Indianapolis 500. Starting 26th in the No. 44
Rayovac Blair Racing Dallara Chevrolet, Barron steadily worked his way
through the 33-car field as the race progressed. On lap 130, Barron led his
first laps in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" and looked in contention to
win the race. At the checkered flag, he had moved up 22 positions to finish
fourth and capture the co-Rookie of the Year honors with Tomas Scheckter.
Barron, becomes the third Zetec Championship alumni to win the award, along
with Robby McGehee in 1999 and Steve Knapp in 1998.
Barron raced in the Zetec Championship in 1996, finishing seventh in the
championship with one top-three and three top-five finishes. The following
year, he graduated to the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. In his rookie
year, he scored an impressive five wins, winning both the Rookie of the Year
award and the Championship. In 1998, he made his CART FedEx Championship
debut with the All American Racing team, running a limited schedule. After
running selected CART races the past few years, Barron joined the Indy
Racing League late last year, running one race prior to joining the series
full-time in 2002. Last year, Barron was inducted into the Formula Ford 2000
Zetec Championship Hall of Fame for his accomplishments after graduating
from the Zetec Championship.
"Our car was very well balanced in traffic," said Barron. "I'm very happy
for what we accomplished, don't get me wrong, but we could have went for the
win for the race. We had a really big issue that happened before the last
free start. We had a sensor, a map sensor, go out on us, and the car was
surging, and we lost a lot of power. But when it's all done, the month that
we've had and to finish fourth, to be Rookie of the Year here at the Indy
500 is an awesome feeling."
The 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship continues with Rounds Six and
Seven at the Milwaukee Mile, May 31-June 1, as part of the Miller Lite 250
weekend in support of the CART FedEx Championship.
