CASCAR - Peterborough Wrap & Points
Kennington leads Super Series points after two events
LONDON, ON - DJ Kennington's victory at Peterborough Speedway on Sunday
afternoon was worth more to him than just a trip to victory lane. With his
win in the Logel's Auto Parts 200, the Castrol Intrepid driver was
propelled to the top of the CASCAR Super Series points chase, following two
of 12 events.
The St. Thomas, ON resident has picked up where he left off last season,
and is demonstrating the same high level of consistency that made him one
of the most successful racers on the tour in 2001. Just two races into the
2002 campaign, Kennington has one win, one pole and anther sixth-place
result. His record is all the more impressive considering the rough nature
of the races at Delaware and Peterborough.
Kennington's two race total of 319 points places him seven markers ahead
of Robbie Thompson, who won at Delaware and appeared to be on his way to
victory at Peterborough when a flat tire on his Logel's/SMP Intrepid took
him out of contention.
Several pre-season favourites for the CASCAR Super Series championship have
experienced tough times in the opening two events, but are no means out of
contention. Sitting 10th is Peter Gibbons, the two-time National champion,
who is looking to rebound after a difficult 2001 season. The Stouffville,
ON racer has won the last two Super Series races at St-Eustache and will no
doubt be looking ahead to this Saturday night's race at the flat Montreal
oval to get the Canadian Tire Chevy back into contention.
Meanwhile, perennial points-race contenders like Dave Whitlock (12th in
points), Al Turner (22nd), Dave Jacombs (23rd) and Ron Beauchamp (24th) are
all hoping to get their respective seasons jump-started following difficult
starts. All have been fast on the track, but were the victims of either
mechanical gremlins or accidents at Delaware and/or Peterborough. On Sunday
afternoon, both Turner and Beauchamp were in contention for top finishes,
late in the race, when they were involved in a heavy crash.
