Kennington wins at Peterborough
PETERBOROUGH, ON - DJ Kennington settled a score with Peterborough Speedway
on Sunday afternoon. In 2001, the Castrol Intrepid racer led almost the
entire race at the high-banked, 1/3-mile speedway, but a miscue in traffic
- late in the race - cost him the lead and the win.
This year, however, the St. Thomas, ON racer wasn't to be denied.
Kennington started third in the field of 29 CASCAR Super Series racers who
competed in the 'Logel Auto Parts 200, presented by Pennzoil' at
Peterborough, and took the lead on lap 137 of the 200 lap event.
Despite the best efforts of Milverton's Scott Steckly, Kennington was a man
on a mission and held off the AW Millwrights / ERB Pontiac driver to post
his first Super Series win since the Mosport road course event, last summer.
For the second week in a row, NTN Taurus racer Mark Dilley finished third.
Originally scheduled for Saturday night, the race was postponed by rain and
took place under sunny skies on Sunday afternoon. The Logel Auto Parts 200
was slowed nine times for a total of 45 laps.
Following two CASCAR Super Series events, Kennington leads the unofficial
point standings with a slim 7-point gap (319 points to 312) over sophomore
racer Robbie Thompson, the winner of last week's season opener, at Delaware
Speedway. Dilley's podium finishes in consecutive races have earned him 304
points; he's third after two rounds.
CASCAR NOTES: The next CASCAR Super Series race takes place next weekend
(Saturday, June 1) at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache... The race at
Peterborough marked the return of longtime CASCAR announcer Ron St. Clair
behind the Super Series microphone. St. Clair, who now lives in Vernon, BC,
flew in from the west coast to work his first CASCAR race, in Ontario,
since the fall of 2000.
