Exciting Racing Action at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (May 25, 2002) - Racing action heated up Saturday night
at Hardeeville as the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models were
featured in a 100 Lap "Dash for the Cash" event during Coastal Plains
Insurance Night at the Races with Tommy Porter of Savannah, GA picking up
the win. Craig Goess, Jr. from Greenville, NC picked up the Legends
Feature. Stephen Moore of St. George, SC won the Mini Stock feature and
Scott Thorne of Hardeeville, SC took home the Xtreme Stock checkers.
Tommy Porter Jr. led from flag to flag and had enough at the end to hold
off Shane Jenkins of Statesboro, GA. Jenkins' race theory was obvious from
the start, to stay right on the coattails of Porter and make his move
toward the end of the race. Jenkins tried but was not able to overtake the
strong Porter. Finishing third was Tom Haidon of Hilton Head, SC.
The Legends Cars B-main sent its top 6 drivers into the feature race as
Jimmy Lang of Bluffton, SC won handily over Jonathan Haidon of Hilton Head,
SC. In the Legends feature race, the field was given a tutorial from
National Pro Division points leader Craig Goess, Jr. of Greenville, NC as
he also led from flag-to-flag to pick up the win. Several caution laps
gave the opportunity for 2nd place finisher Clay Hair of Mt. Pleasant, NC
to make a run for the checkers but could not move ahead of Goess. Placing
third was Burton, SC native, Kevin O'Brien.
The Xtreme Stock cars fielded another full field of racers with everyone
with their sights set on overtaking current points leader Don Dean of
Sheldon, SC. True to form, the Xtreme racers didn't mind mixing things up
a bit during the 30-lap event. Dasher had the race in hand, but on Lap 26
with his car slipping away, Dean was able to overtake him and hold on for
the win. Dean held off strong showings from Scott Thorne of Hardeeville,
SC and Keith Sanchez of Hardeeville, SC, finishing 2nd and 3rd
respectively. However, after the race Dean, Sanchez, Dasher and Anderson
failed to take their cars through post-race Technical Inspection and
subsequently they were disqualified. Thorne was posted as the winner with
Chuck Johnson of Dublin, GA runner-up.
Mini Stock action returned to the track showcasing a hot battle for the
points race between Stephen Moore of St. George, SC and Johnny Brown of
Bluffton, SC. The pair were the only two leaders of the race, trading it
back and forth with Moore holding on for the win over Brown. Finishing 3rd
was David Carr, Jr. of Martinez, GA.
New to the track was the Road Warrior division, a four-cylinder affordable
racing series on the 1/5-mile flat track. There were three exhibition
races throughout the night, counter-clockwise racing, clockwise racing and
reverse racing. Chelsea Carr, of Martinez, GA let the field know from the
beginning that "she was here to win." Other Road Warrior racers Billy
Tysinger, Sr. of Hardeeville, SC and Tim Padgett said " they were glad to
be involved in this and really just wanted to have a good time."
Next weekend, Saturday, June 1st, there will be no racing at the
Hardeeville Motor Speedway, but there will be flea market in front of the
track from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Vendor spaces are free. However racing
will return on Saturday night, June 8th as Benny the Bomb Car Explosion
comes to the Hardeeville Motor Speedway, along with O.C. Welch
Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models, Legends Cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks,
Road Warriors and Xtreme Stock Cars. Gates open at 4:00 p.m., qualifying
begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by the National Anthem at 7:00 p.m. General
