DYER INHERITS WIN AT INDIANAPOLIS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DYER INHERITS WIN AT INDIANAPOLIS

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (May 25, 2002) –Tom Dyer, of San Rafael, Calif., won
Round Five of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship at Indianapolis
Raceway Park. Completing the top-three was JW Urlin, of London, Ont., Can.
and Sean McIntosh, of Coquitlam, B.C., Can.
Racing under the lights, the 50-lap race at IRP was run after a three-hour
rain delay. At the start, Bryan Sellers, starting from the pole position,
got a great jump on the field and led comfortably into turn one. On lap
three, as the field battled for position, Luis Schiavo spun exiting turn
four and made contact with the wall. With no place to go Travis Irving made
contact with Schiavo ending his race and bringing out the yellow flag. The
field circulated the 0.686-mile oval behind the pace car for 10 laps, as the
wreckage was cleared off the track. On the lap 13 restart, Sellers got
another great jump on Dyer, in the No. 33 Cycle Shack/Menards/Cowboy
Charcoal/The Original Grill Pad/Flamingo Resorts Van Diemen Ford, leading
into turn one. Sellers, quickly began to post the fastest laps of the race
and by the midway point in the race had built a lead of over six seconds.
Behind the leader a great battle ensued between the top-five for position.
McIntosh, driving the No. 24 Kirmac Carstar/PPG/Lordco Auto Van Diemen Ford,
repeatedly looked to the inside of Dyer, but was never able to make a real
challenge for the position. As the leaders encountered lapped traffic, Dyer
pulled away from McIntosh. In the final stages of the race, Urlin closed in
on McIntosh and challenged for position. With two laps remaining in the
race, McIntosh went low around lapped traffic exiting turn two and Urlin
went high. The duo went side-by-side into turn three and at the
start/finish, Urlin, driving the No. 19 Budget Rental Car Mygale Ford, had
taken third place. At the checkered flag, Sellers had won the race by 8.246
seconds. Following the race, Sellers was penalized one lap for jumping both
the start and restart, promoting Dyer to the win. The win was Dyer’s first
Zetec Championship win in 27 career starts.
“This is a great result for the team and myself,” said Dyer. “Last year
here, I had probably my worst race in the series, so to win tonight is a big
improvement. The goal now is to continue to work hard, build on this result
and be in contention for the championship in October.”
“We’ve been working towards this for the past three years,” said Urlin, who
scores his first podium finish. “I knew lapped traffic would play a part in
the race and when I saw Sean [McIntosh] go low I went high. I really love
ovals, maybe the fact my dad raced stock cars has helped.”
Completing the top-five was Lawson Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md., in the
No. 32 Forsythe/King Auto/M&M Welding Van Diemen Ford and Jeffrey Jones, of
Sarasota, Fla., in the No. 2 JCI Chemicals/Winchester/Cape Motorsports Van
Diemen Ford.
