SELLERS CAPTURES THIRD CONSECUTIVE POLE AT INDIANAPOLIS
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (May 25, 2002) –Bryan Sellers, of Centerville, Ohio,
captured the pole for Round Five of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Completing the top-three was Tom
Dyer, of San Rafael, Calif. and Sean McIntosh, of Coquitlam, B.C., Can.
Under cloudy, but warm conditions, qualifying for the 50-lap race at IRP
was run in the early afternoon. Unlike years past, the 30-minute qualifying
session was an open session and not a single-car session. Early in the
session, teams worked on getting tires up to temperature and finding open
space in traffic to post a quick lap. As the session progressed, times began
steadily drop and Sellers, in the No. 3 Yes Network/3 Dimensional
Services/Arai Helmets/Sparco/Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, moved to the
top of the charts. After stopping briefly in the early part of the session,
for some minor changes, Dyer quickly began moving up the time sheets. At the
midway point of the session, Dyer, in the No. 33 Cycle Shack/Menards/Cowboy
Charcoal/The Original Grill Pad/Flamingo Resorts Van Diemen Ford, had moved
into second place. At the same time that Dyer was moving up the starting
order, McIntosh, in the No. 24 Kirmac Carstar/PPG/Lordco Auto Van Diemen
Ford, posted a fast lap to move into third place. With five minutes
remaining in the session and several cars looking poised to post a quick
lap, Allen May made heavy contact with the wall exiting turn two. The
incident ended the session, giving Sellers his fourth pole position in five
races in 2002, with a time of 0:21.134 (116.85 mph).
“The team gave me a great car again,” said Sellers, who currently leads the
Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship. “It was pretty hectic out there, so I
was just trying to find a hole in the traffic. Starting up front is always
important, but I know the race will be a real fight.”
“It’s real nice to start up front,” said Dyer, who is making his second
career start at IRP. “The car is real good in both traffic and on my own, so
I’m looking forward to the race.”
“The car took a little time to come in,” said McIntosh, who is making his
oval debut. “It was hard to find a gap and get a good lap in and I didn’t
know where I was on the charts till the end of the session.”
Completing the top-five for the race under the lights is JW Urlin, of
London, Ont., Can., in the No 19 Budget Rental Car Mygale Ford and Tonis
Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill., in the No. 9 MK
Industries/Flexovit/TMI/Redline Oil Van Diemen Ford.
