CASCAR Super Series

CASCAR Super Series heads to Peterborough Speedway

LONDON, ON - The CASCAR Super Series will return to action this Saturday
night (May 25), at Peterborough Speedway. The high-banked, 1/3-mile oval
will host the 'Peterborough 200, presented by Pennzoil', the second of 12
feature races on the 2002 schedule.
Traditionally one of the more physical CASCAR races of the year, upwards
of 30 cars doing battle - under the lights on the tight confines of
Peterborough Speedway - makes for an exciting spectacle. Last year's
Peterborough event was no exception. DJ Kennington put his Castrol Intrepid
on the pole for the 150-lap race and led until lap 129, at which point he
was slowed, ever so slightly, by lapped traffic. The hiccup allowed Blue
Streak Intrepid racer Al Turner to dart underneath Kennington, and into the
lead. At the end of the race, Turner came under the waving checkered flag
less than a fifth of a second in front of Kennington, who fought valiantly
to the end to recover the lead.
If 150 laps of CASCAR Super Series action at Peterborough Speedway are a
test of the racers and their machines, then 200 laps will push the limits
even further.
Although defending race winner Turner doesn't anticipate making a tire
change during the race, he does believe that protecting his Goodyear slicks
for the late going will be crucial. Reached at his newly expanded racing
shop, the Barrie, ON resident was hoping to bounce back from his 19th-place
result in the season opener, at Delaware Speedway, on Sunday.
"We're going to be stretching the tires a little bit further; tire
management is going to be a little bit more of a factor than it was with
150 laps," said Turner, who doesn't believe, however, that brakes will be a
problem. "We have to take care of the tires, though, because it has the
potential to be a problem there."
Turner started sixth in last year's Peterborough race and picked his way
past the other contenders and lapped traffic, to take the win. "The pass on
DJ was a kind of 'hero or zero' move, depending on whether it works or not.
It worked out for us and it was a nice way to rebound after a poor outing
at Delaware, last year."
Dealing with traffic at Peterborough can be a guessing game. Turner
continued, "Peterborough is very congested and keeping the fenders on the
car is a bit of a challenge. You have to wait for your opportunities.
Guessing which way guys are going to go shouldn't be a problem, but it
often is."
The extended Peterborough race distance will force drivers to maintain
their concentration levels for longer than they ever have in the past at
the 1/3-mile oval. At Peterborough, the need for drivers to maintain focus
at all times is arguably greater than at any other track on the Super
Series circuit.
"You gotta stay on your toes and rely on your spotter at Peterborough,"
noted Turner. "You need all the help you can get there."
Leading the points chase into the Peterborough 200 will be sophomore racer
Robbie Thompson, the winner of the Mopar Parts 250, this past Sunday
afternoon, at Delaware. Prior to the season, the Logel's / SMP Intrepid
racer - who won the Rookie of the Year title in '01 - claimed he was
serious about challenging for the CASCAR Super Series championship in 2002.
His impressive performance at Delaware convinced everyone in attendance
that he's for real.

CARQUEST SERIES: The CASCAR CARQUEST Sportsman Series will also be in
action, at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache, on Saturday night (May 25).
