GM's Vortec HP3 8100 Concept V8 Powers Winning Entry In APBA Offshore Race Series In Marathon, Fla.

Vortec Power Team Captures First And Second Places

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Vortec Power Team captured first and two second places finishes in high-speed boats powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 V8 concept engine at the second race of the season for the 2002 American Power Boat Association Offshore Race Series May 17-19 in Marathon, Fla.

During the race weekend, the seven teams that comprise the Vortec Power Team competed in their respective race divisions on the 5.5-mile course with six turns looping through the Gulf of Mexico. Seventy-six boats were registered for the APBA's Marathon Offshore Grand Prix.

Team Solarized, racing a Vortec-powered powerboat, captured first place in the 10-lap Super Vee Light Single class with a time of 46:17. The team averaged a speed of 76.06 mph and earned 104 points. Team Extreme, racing a Vortec-powered Extreme powerboat, finished in second place. The team posted a time of 46.27 with an average speed of 75.76 mph and earned 93 points. In the Super Vee Light Twin class, Team Pier 57 captured a second place win behind the wheel of a Vortec-powered Scater powerboat. The total time posted for the team was 38:48 with an average speed of 100.01 mph, resulting in 92 points.

The third race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of 10 offshore races at various venues, is June 7-9 in Cape Cod, Mass. Competitors in 10 race classes will continue to vie for points leading to the National Competition Oct. 18-20 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the World Championship Nov. 18-27 in Key West, Fla.
