Honda Alabama Selects Ryder to Manage Just-in-Time Inbound Supplies
MIAMI--May 21, 2002--Ryder System, Inc. , a global leader in transportation and supply chain management solutions, has been selected by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama LLC to develop and facilitate a just-in-time (JIT) system for delivery of inbound supplies to its manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Ala.
"We look to Ryder's industry leadership and expertise in the automotive industry to help us expand our production levels and drive efficiencies in the supply chain," said Rick Mayo, Senior Manager of Honda Manufacturing of Alabama.
Phased implementation of the project began in late October 2001 and will continue toward full implementation of the design by mid-2002. The project design emphasizes three focus areas: vehicle capacity optimization (maximizing use of trailer load space); route optimization (designing routes and sequencing to minimize non-productive miles); and vehicle utilization (planning for maximized use of lean levels of trucks, trailers and other equipment).
"The industry reputation and consumer preference that the Honda brand enjoys globally are driven by the quality of its processes," said Tom Jones, Ryder's Senior Vice President of Global Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial supply chain solutions. "Ryder's successful experience serving Honda's sister operations in Canada enabled our team to push the envelope of innovation while providing a very practical, real-world solution that began to add value on day one."
Ryder began serving the Honda of Canada Mfg. plant, located in Alliston, Ontario in 1999. The services Ryder provides include JIT inbound materials flow, trial parts management, materials scheduling and supplier coordination.
