SAE International Presents 2nd Annual Environmental Excellence in Transportation Awards
WASHINGTON, May 20 -- Eight individuals and corporate teams have been recognized for their innovations aimed at reducing the environmental impact of transportation. The 2nd annual Environmental Excellence in Transportation Awards were presented at a ceremony this week in conjunction with the SAE Government and Industry Meeting at L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C.
The award is based on such factors as innovation, originality, demonstrated positive impact on the environment over existing technologies and public acceptance. Winners were selected from entries in each category and were determined by an independent panel consisting of transportation experts representing industry, government agencies and academia. The awards are coordinated by SAE International.
2002 winners, listed by category, team leader, affiliation and project title are as follows:
Education: Dr. Lori Fussell, SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge
New Methods and Tools: Monica Prokopyshen, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, "Environmental Accounting cost Model Tool"
Stationary Energy and Emissions: Thomas Mort, Delphi Automotive Systems, "Powerhouse Decentralization Project at the Delphi Systems Flint East Plant."
Recycling Reuse and Remanufacturing: Dr. Robert Kainz, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, "Redistilled Engine Coolant."
Process Innovations: Shrikant Joshi, Delphi Harrison Thermal Systems, "Electrostatic Dry Fluxing and Thermal Degreasing EF/TD for Automotive Heat Exchangers."
Service Maintenance and Logistics: James Blair, BASF Corporation, "Reduction in Fuel Consumption and Emissions Through Innovative Nationwide Logistics Management Process."
Materials Development and Usage (2 winners): Stephanie Gretka, Visteon Corporation, "Fully Recyclable Olefinic Instrument Panels," and John Bradburn, General-Motors Corporation, "Environmental, Health, and Safety Engineering Support for Acoustical and Structural Vehicle Material Usage."
Runner's Up awards were also presented to 4 individuals/corporate teams: Joseph Toth, General Motors Corporation; Brenda Baney, Delphi Automotive Systems; George Wagner, DaimlerChrysler; and William Osborne, Dayton Thermal Products.
