Robbie Thompson wins the Mopar Parts 250
CASCAR Super Series // Mopar Parts 250 // 250 Laps
Delaware Speedway // Round #1 // May 19, 2002 // London, ON
LONDON, ON - Robbie Thompson put all thoughts of a 'sophomore jinx' behind
him on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Speedway. The Logel's Auto Parts
Intrepid driver won the CASCAR Super Series season-opening Mopar Parts 250,
in his first race since clinching the Rookie of the Year title, last
September at the same half-mile Delaware oval.
Thompson's car was missing more bodywork than it had left on it by the end
of the 250-lap race, but miraculously, the cosmetic fibreglass damage
didn't hurt his car's speed or handling. Over the closing laps, the
Southampton, ON driver was concerned about the amount of fuel remaining in
his gas tank, but the high number of cautions allowed him to stretch out
his mileage, and make it to the end in the lead.
As he did when he accepted his rookie award last fall, Thompson dedicated
the achievement to his late mentor and friend, Don Biederman. The Canadian
racing legend was recently posthumously inducted into the Canadian
Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Second place went to Exide Pontiac driver Pete Vanderwyst. The St. Thomas,
ON resident was able to drive underneath the NTN Taurus of Mark Dilley as
they exited turn 4, on the last lap, to win a side-by-side race by inches.
Three-time Super Series champion Dave Whitlock was fourth, in his Fast
Lane Taurus, ahead of the A-DOR Construction Pontiac of London's Mike
Alguire. The Mopar Parts 250 was a caution-filled affair. By the end of the
race, the vast majority of vehicles carried battle scars.
CASCAR NOTES: The next race on the CASCAR Super Series schedule takes place
next Saturday, May 25, at the high-banked, 1/3-mile Peterborough
Speedway... The third race of the CASCAR CARQUEST season was held at
Delaware Speedway on Friday night. Jim Patrick broke Steve Robblee's
two-race 2002 winning streak when he took the checkered flag in the 100-lap
event...
