Kennington earns pole for Sunday's season opening Mopar Parts 250
CASCAR Super Series // Mopar Parts 250 // 250 Laps
Delaware Speedway // Round #1 // May 19, 2002 // London, ON

LONDON, ON - DJ Kennington won the pole for the Mopar Parts 250, the first
race of the 2002 CASCAR Super Series season, on Saturday afternoon at
Delaware Speedway. The Castrol SYNTEC Intrepid racer was the fastest of 41
drivers who participated in time trials, lapping the half-mile oval in
19.618 seconds, which translated into a speed of 91.752 miles per hour.
Kennington finished fourth in the final 2001 Super Series point standings.
The St. Thomas, ON racer went on a tear after a technical infraction in the
Delaware opener last year, posting consistent finishes throughout the
remainder of the season. Sunday's pole position will be Kennington's first
since he was fastest in qualifying for the Peterborough Speedway race,
early last season.
Starting alongside of Kennington will be the Canadian Tire Chevy of Peter
Gibbons, who won 'The Great Canadian Race' at Delaware Speedway last
September. Both front row drivers have traditionally been very strong at
Delaware and have to be counted among the contenders to win the Mopar Parts
250.
The second row will see Pete Vanderwyst and Steve Robblee start
side-by-side. Vanderwyst is hoping to bounce back after a frustrating 2001
season, while Robblee is a two-time Super Series champion, who currently
competes full-time in the CASCAR CARQUEST Series.
The top 20 starting positions for Sunday's Mopar Parts 250 were set by the
time trial results. The remainder of the field was determined via Saturday
night's 25-lap Final Qualifiers' race, which was won by Al Turner, and by
time trial results and provisional positions based on last year's final
points. Twenty competitors took part in the Final Qualifiers' race.

MOPAR PARTS 250 NOTES: Kerry Micks is the defending winner of the Mopar
Parts 250. The Mt. Albert, ON racer used his quick start at Delaw...re
Speedway to propel him to second place in the final 2001 CASCAR Super
Series point standings... Three-time CASCAR National champion Dave Whitlock
sat on the pole for both Delaware Speedway races in 2001. He spun on the
first lap of his two timed laps on Saturday afternoon and will start 23rd
in the 250, three spots behind defending Super Series champ Don Thomson Jr.
... Dave Jacombs holds the track record for CASCAR Super Series qualifying
at Delaware Speedway. He circled the half-mile oval in 19.343 seconds on
May 19, 2000...

SUNDAY SCHEDULE: Delaware will open its spectator gates at 11 a.m. on
Sunday morning. The driver autograph session will start at 11:15, and will
be followed by the driver introductions at 1:30 p.m. The green flag to
start both the Mopar Parts 250 and the CASCAR Super Series season is
scheduled to fly at 2 p.m.
