SELLERS DOMINATES IN CANADA
BOWMANVILLE, ONT., CAN. (May 18, 2002) –Bryan Sellers, of Centerville, Ohio
won Round Three of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season at
Mosport International Raceway. Completing the top-three was Jeffrey Jones,
of Sarasota, Fla. and Mark Wilkins, of Toronto, Ont., Can. Kip Meeks, of
Grove City, Ohio, won the American Continental Championship class.
Following all the other race activities on Saturday at the Victoria Day
Trans-Am Weekend, race one of the Zetec Championship doubleheader at Mosport
got under way in very cool conditions. Starting from the pole position,
Sellers kept the lead ahead of Jones into turn one at the green flag. By the
end of the first lap, Sellers and Jones had begun to pull away from therest
of the field. While the duo lapped nose to tail, Wilkins in the No. 34
TrizecHahn/Multimatic/Doncaster Racing Van Diemen Ford began to build a gap
on No. 33 Dyer in fourth place. As the race progressed, the top-five remain
unchanged, with Sellers beginning to pull away from Jones. By the midway
point of the race, Sellers, driving the No. 3 Yes Network/3 Dimensional
Services/Arai Helmets/Sparco/Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, had built a
three second and begun to post laps better than his time in qualifying. On
lap 15, a full-course yellow was displayed for No. 14 Groom making contact
in turn nine, bunching the field back up. The field was given the one lap to
green signal on lap 18, setting up a one-lap dash to the checkered flag. On
the restart, Sellers got a great jump on Jones, in the No. 2 JCI
Chemicals/Winchester Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, and lead uncontested
to the checkered flag. The victory was Sellers second flag-to-flag victory
in 2002 and gives him the lead the championship with 86 points.
“I’ve had a great car all weekend,” said Sellers. “You always have a plan
before the race starts, but it usually goes away right when you see the
green flag. The full-course yellow was definitely something I didn’t want to
see. I tried to get a good jump and things worked out really well.”
“Bryan [Sellers] drove a great race and deserved the win,” said Jones. “I
tried to stay close, but never really had any opportunity to go for the win.
I really got fooled on the restart and nearly lost second place.”
“I’m excited about getting my first podium on my home track,” said Wilkins.
Jeff [Jones] and Bryan [Sellers] just took off and I couldn’t catch them.
The work the team did after the crash in qualifying was great and I really
need to give them a lot of the credit. Tomorrow I’m going to push hard and
try work my way up through the field.”
“I had a lot of fun out there,” said Meeks. “With no one to race against in
my class I just wanted to stay out of the leaders way and try to get better
with every lap.”
Completing the top-five was Tom Dyer, of San Rafael, Calif. and Andy
Brumbaugh, of Blythewood, S.C.
