86th Indianapolis 500 - Practice Notes - Friday, May 17, 2002
Indianapolis Motor Speedway - 2.5-Mile Oval
Round 5 of 15 on the 2002 Indy Racing League

Rain, wind and unseasonably cool temperatures made today's practice for the
86th Indianapolis 500 an unproductive one for Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing
teammates Felipe Giaffone and Tony Kanaan, as well as the rest of their
competitors. For the second day in a row, they shared the Hollywood/Mo Nunn
Racing back-up car while their primary cars, already qualified in the fourth
and fifth positions, respectively, for the May 26 event, were back at the Mo
Nunn Racing shop undergoing race day preparations.

Giaffone, with the back-up Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Chevrolet G-Force
numbered #21T for his runs, put in 52 laps around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis
Motor Speedway oval with a fast lap of 224.226 mph. It was the 18th-fastest
lap of the day, the third in a row that he and his teammate have focused on
race-day set-up and scrubbing tires. Giaffone qualified fourth last
Saturday with a four-lap average speed of 230.326 mph.

Kanaan, with the back-up car numbered 17T for his runs (an Indy Racing
League formality), ran only four shake-down laps today without a hot lap.
He qualified fifth on Saturday with a four-lap average of 230.253 mph.

Robbie Buhl, who qualified second on Saturday, had today's fastest practice
lap in his back-up car at 228.077 mph. Airton Dare and Alex Barron, both
who have yet to qualify, reached 227.435 mph and 226.195 mph, respectively,
today for the second- and third-fastest laps. Temperatures reached only the
mid-50s today with a steady 15-mph north wind chilling conditions even
further. There were three rain delays for a total of two hours, 22 minutes,
and practice ended 35 minutes early due to the wet conditions.

Saturday is the final full day of practice before Sunday's Bump Day of final
qualifying. Twenty-four of the 33 starting positions have been filled.
