SELLERS CAPTURES BOTH POLES AT MOSPORT
BOWMANVILLE, ONT., CAN. (May 17, 2002) –Bryan Sellers, of Centerville,
Ohio, captured the pole for both rounds of the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship at Mosport International Raceway, Completing the top-three for
Round Three was Jeffrey Jones, of Sarasota, Fla. and Mark Wilkins, of
Toronto, Ont., Can. For Round Four Ricardo Imery, of Caracas, Venezuela and
Andy Brumbaugh, of Blythewood, S.C., completed the top-three. The top ACC
qualifier for both rounds was Kip Meeks, of Grove City, Ohio.
Qualifying for race one was run under clear and sunny skies in cool
conditions on the demanding 2.459-mile road course. Early in the session the
Ford Zetec powered cars searched for grip, while the tires came up to
temperature. By the five-minute mark, Sellers, in the No. 3 Yes Network/3
Dimensional Services/Arai Helmets/Sparco/Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford,
had posted a quick lap of 1:18.107 (113.33 mph). Just behind Sellers on the
time sheet was Jones, in the No. 2 JCI Chemicals/Winchester Cape Motorsports
Van Diemen Ford, with a time of 1:18.310 (113.04 mph). At the nine-minute
mark of the qualifying session, No. 32 Lawson Aschenbach made heavy contact
with the tire wall in turn three, resulting in a stoppage in the
twenty-minute qualifying session. When qualifying resumed, with five
remaining in the session, Wilkins, driving the No. 34
TrizecHahn/Multimatic/Doncaster Racing AIM Autosport Van Diemen Ford,
mounted a late challenge for the pole position. Using his local knowledge of
the track, Wilkins posted a fast time of 1:18.542 (112.70) on his
penultimate lap, good enough for third position. Unfortunately on his last
lap, Wilkins went off-track in turn three, impacting the tire wall.
The second qualifying session of the day, for race two, was run late in the
afternoon. Early in the session the top-five cars struggled to match the
times set in the morning session. By the midway point of the session Sellers
had jumped to the top of the charts, followed by Imery, in the No. 5
Cavenas/Venezolana de Ascensor Cape Motorsports, and Brumbaugh. Shortly
after the trio had posted their fast laps, the session was black flagged for
No. 46 Schiavo making hard contact with the wall in turn nine. The session
resumed with 15 minutes remaining, but was quickly black-flagged when
Brumbaugh, in the No. 86 EMX/Van Diemen International AIM Autosport Van
Diemen Ford, hit the tire wall in turn nine. With less than five minutes in
the session, no driver was able to better Sellers time of 1:17.824 (113.74
mph), giving Sellers the pole position for both rounds of the doubleheader.
In capturing both poles, Sellers has now captured the pole in three of the
four rounds in 2002.
“It’s been a great start to the season,” said Sellers, who currently leads
the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship. “The team has been flawless since
we’ve got here and I think the fact I have a teammate starting beside me in
each race shows how good a job they’ve done. I’m looking forward to the
first race tomorrow, but I know it will be hard fought race.”
“I think the yellow flags hurt me,” said Jones, who won the last round at
Sebring. “I hesitated a little, which in this series being a close as it is,
can cost you a position. I know the car is good, so I’m looking forward to
the race.”
“The car was great,” said Imery. “I ran into some traffic on my quick lap,
so I know I have car capable of winning. After Sebring I’ll looking for a
good result this weekend.”
“The team gave me a very good car,” said Wilkins, who raced at Mosport last
year in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship. “I know there is definitely
more in the car, which should help me battle for the win.”
“The car felt really good,” said Brumbaugh, who has a lot laps at Mosport,
after winning Canadian Formula Ford Championship last year. “I have a pretty
got record here and am confident that I’ll be able to run up front and
challenge for the win.”
Completing the top-five for race one on Saturday is Tom Dyer, of San
Rafael, Calif. and Imery. For race two on Sunday, Anthony Massari, of Miami,
Fla. and Jones complete the top-five.
