Team Spotlight on Morgan-Dollar Motorsports

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 15, 2002) -- Morgan-Dollar Motorsports is known for its success in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Last season, the team's #46 Chevy truck captured two poles and seven top-five finishes, including a victory in Memphis. But this season the team decided to broaden its focus, fielding not only its Craftsman Series truck, but also the #46 Computer Associates Corvette in the Rolex Sports Car Series. Team owner Rob Morgan and his father, Charles, kicked off the season by joining with brothers Stephen and Andrew Richards at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, where the foursome took second place in the American GT class.

Since then, Morgan-Dollar has found it's way into the top-five again and again, but has yet to capture its first Rolex Series win. The team hopes to improve its chances of earning that first victory next month at the 6 Hours of The Glen, where it will expand its efforts by fielding two Corvettes. The father-son Morgan duo will pilot the newly added #47 entry, while the Richards brothers continue their run the #46 car.

IN THE WORDS OF ROB MORGAN...
When did you become involved in racing?
As long as I can remember, my dad has been racing. I started driving in '92 in what is now the Grand-Am Cup series.

How was Morgan-Dollar Motorsports created?
David Dollar and I had a mutual acquaintance that suggested we team up for the Topeka, Kansas truck race, since I had road course experience and Dollar's experience was more the oval racing of NASCAR. We pretty much just became friends and from there, my dad [Charles Morgan] and I felt Dollar had everything we were looking for in a partner.

Do you have any superstitions?
Not one.

What are some of the differences between running a Craftsman Series truck and a Rolex Series Corvette?
The biggest challenge has had to be finding crew with experience in road racing. At Daytona this year, we had less than a month to build that Computer Associates Corvette and honestly, only one guy at the shop with any road racing experience. All of our crewmembers come from the NASCAR world and they had to learn a lot. But I really think they have come a long way and we will see better results in the very near future.

What are your thoughts on the 2002 season so far?
I think the team is gaining much needed experience. The drivers, too. You can tell there is such a big difference in our confidence level compared to the first of the season.

What is your most memorable racing moment?
Man... that's a tough one. I would have to say either winning [the GT1 class] with my dad [for Brix Racing] at the 1996 Rolex 24 or winning the 1997 World Sportscar Race in Canada with Ron Fellows [in the Scandia Racing Ferrari 333SP.]

What goals have you set for yourself and your team?
Our goals are long-term. For 2002, we have our goals set for the crew and drivers to kind of just get used to the cars. From there, we have high goals set for next season.

What hobbies do you have outside of racing?
What do you mean "outside of racing?" Seriously, though... my wife Vici and I have an eight-month-old little girl, Makenna, and so I spend a lot of my time just being a daddy. I also have an auto dealership in Orange County, TruSpeed Motorcars, and I am there when I am not at home or on the road. I really don't have a lot of time for any other hobbies.

Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life?
Without a doubt, it's been my dad.
