GM Powertrain Facilities In Flint Get New Identity

FLINT, Mich. - GM Powertrain and UAW officials announced today that Powertrain's V6 Engine and Components facilities, located on the former Buick City site, will operate and be managed as one site with a new name --- GM Powertrain Flint North. Today's announcement was made during a special site celebration attended by Powertrain officials, regional and local UAW leaders, site employees and community leaders. The overall theme for the celebration was "One Site / One Team."

"With the dismantling of the Buick City Assembly plant and related facilities, we wanted the Flint community to know our Powertrain facilities and UAW Local 599 still have an ongoing presence in the community," said Joe Choate, site manager of GM Powertrain Flint North. "The site continues on today as a world class producer of engines and automotive powertrain component parts."

The GM Powertrain Flint North site, consisting of six individual facilities, produces the 3800 Series II and 3800 II supercharged V6 engines, pistons, crankshafts, front covers, intake manifolds, water pumps, balance shaft gears, flywheels, torque converters, shafts, pinions, gears and gear set assemblies for GM vehicles.

"We have been successfully insourcing jobs to our operations due to the dedication and team focus by everyone who works at this site. It is this approach that will help us secure the future of this site and jobs in this community," said Don Wilson, UAW Local 599 chairman.

"Over the years, the UAW members and GM management of the engine and components operations have supported local charitable organizations and events with cash and volunteerism," added Joe Niedzwiecki, UAW Local 599 president. "We look forward to being a continuing influence in the community."

In 2001, the GM Powertrain Flint North team contributed more than $700,000 to various charitable organizations in the Flint community.
