Peterson Takes Ferrari Challenge Points Lead

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 13, 2002) -- Doug Peterson took the lead in the Ferrari Challenge driver point standings after capturing his third-straight win of the season at Road Atlanta over the weekend. Peterson, who pilots his Ferrari 360 for the Shelton Sports Car team, kicked off his three-race winning streak by dominating the Ferrari Challenge event at Virginia International Raceway, April 27-28, and continued by winning the first of two races at Road Atlanta.

Peterson won the pole for the 30-minute race at Road Atlanta and, after dropping to second place on the first lap, reclaimed the lead on lap two and never relinquished it. Darius Grala, driving for Ferrari of Orange County, was the driver who managed to take Peterson's lead away during the opening lap, and opened up Sunday's 45-minute race the same way. Although Peterson regained the lead one lap later, Grala took advantage of a caution to catch up to the leader and passed him for the 0.327-second victory -- a first for the Ferrari of Orange County driver.

The latest Ferrari Challenge driver standings show Peterson with a five-point lead over Jose Luis Valera, who swept March's season opener on California Speedway's new road course. Grala is third in the points, but sits 21-points behind the leader after a string of bad luck. Grala, who has qualified on the front row at every event this season, posted poor finishes at the first three races of the season due to an accident, a sliced tire and gearbox trouble.

Ed Davies leads the driver standings for both the drum and disk brake categories of the North American Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge. Davies picked up a pair of class wins at Road Atlanta over the weekend and was the overall winner of the drum brake category at the event. Todd Morici is second in the disc brake driver standings, four points behind Davies, while Peter Giddings holds second place in the drum brake standings, nine points behind the leaders.

The next Ferrari Challenge event will be at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, as part of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, June 8-9, and the next North American Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge event will be at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant, near Montreal, July 26-28.
